Well, after further investigation into a problem I am just recently having (ever since I installed MC9), I have found that the file sizes of my 6000+ MP3's when arranged by size in the MC9 database, starts at 128bytes and ends with 42MB stepping up little by little to that as if it was doing it on purpose. Each file starts getting larger and larger.

If you sort by file size, wouldn't you expect to see the small files at the top of the list and larger files as you scroll down?

well not when there are several HUNDRED 128 byte files and they are basically all messed up when played upon further investigation. The increments are so close together and in a pattern that is in no way a coincidence and was not a problem prior to installing and using MC9 the other day. Next blowoff please....

Bare with me -- I'm just trying to understand.

A 128 byte file is definitely goofed.  If you can reproduce MC doing that to a file, please let us know and we'll fix it.

Otherwise, maybe if I saw a screenshot I'd understand what you meant by the pattern.

Is the problem only that some files are now 128 bytes, or are there problems with other files?

Can you find any rhyme or reason as to what files are 128 bytes?  Can you reproduce it at all?

Sorry for the hassles -- if we can reproduce the problem, it will be fixed right away.

Also, the files are attempting to play when I start from the top when sorted by size. but, as you can imagine, they play based on the file size..meaning that most play nothing..getting skipped over and then eventually get snippets and then finally get full songs towards the very end..although those files are way too big. Knowing that MediaCenter is the only MP3 app I have used that carries a database function for all my mp3's, and also knowing I have no problems with any other media or files on the same drive would obviously make this a MC9 issue. As it stands right now, the files are THAT size in Windows as well. These songs took a very very very long time to rip and organize! I hope you guys are ready to back up your reputation on this one!

Altough rare, the 128 byte MP3 gremlin has been mentioned in the past.  We've never been able to reproduce it though.  Our best guess in the past was a conflict with a Norton file restorer -- it was the only common thread we found.  We're sort of grasping at straws since it's so rare.  

It's not clear what empties the file or why.  It could be the actual tagging, or the file could get emptied some other way, and the tagger just adds a tag to the emtpy file.

If anyone has any information to help us find what causes this, we will do everything we can to fix it.

In response to Phat Phreddy, I am only importing from a single local directory. The structure is quite simple for the drive in question: It is a partition with only files archived in it (no apps or OS). There are several folders in it's root (Apps, Games, Drivers, Media, etc..) Within that Media folder there are several other folders (Movies, wave files, Music Videos, MP3's, etc..) In the MP3's directory it is arranged with artists that I found to have 2 or less hits in the root of the directory. Then the artists that do not apply to that rule have their own folders which may either have several singles or subfolders with full albums and some of both. I use a simple Artist - Song naming format. I was not having trouble with these files and know this is definately not a coincidence..be careful.

As far as Wile E. One goes, I appreciate the fact that you do not like reading negative comments in the forums and I also realize this is beta software. This is also not a crash or anything of the sort.

I sent you an e-mail asking that you tone it down a little.  If you can report facts without accusations, it makes it easier to read and understand.  It also gives more credibility to your report.

There are a lot of ways that computers, software, and users can go wrong, and only one of them is MC.

If it is MC, we need to know how to re-create the problem.  You may be able to help.

We found and fixed a problem in the ID3V2 code today that _may_ have created problems IF there was also another simultaneous error that caused no temp file to be written -- a disk drive or OS error, for example.

This problem was in source from the ID3V2 standards group.  The source has been used by many other companies.  We have used it successfully for several years, with a _possible_ handful (<10) of exceptions.

My problem is not with the fact that this user reported a problem, but with his absolute certainty that he knew where it was and with his half dozen angry posts overnight.

I checked in the past and I did have a few that were 0 byte, but did not jump to blame MC\MJ for the problem since many things can go wrong.

since early betas i have not seen the problem and i have updated the tags many times since then, and still seen no problem.

I guess all the moons were not alined correctly for me to see it.

I'm glad to hear that there might have actually been something wrong, and that I wasn't simply going crazy!    Of course...now I wonder if there is something wrong with my computer... but hopefully that isn't the case, as I haven't seen this problem for quite some time.

I decided to try this little ditty of a view, small to big...wow!, holy schmoly, I've got files that go from 94k in tiny increments up to 72M! What, this is out of control, this is total B...no wait, those are just those Hanna Barbera Sound FX albums I have in my collection for some stupid reason. You think maybe these were just his files and he never looked at them in size before? It was an interesting view to see somethings that are smaller bitrate, or those soundtracks that have soundbites in them, like "Snatch" or "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back", or those weird They Might Be Giants 15 second treasures. But I have to admit, just for a second, I thought, oh no...
