I often combine descriptions from TMDB and Wikipedia and noticed that in the new active templates, there is no way to expand and read the full description, it's always truncated. Is that expected behaviour?

JRiver's new template still has my max length of 441 chars for description. I needed that because I need to control placement of the sub items which comes after the description so I could fit everything I want nicely on one "page". JRiver's new template doesn't seem to care at least at this point so maybe it could be changed to show the whole description as truncation is not needed.

It would be a VERY nice new feature if sub item heights could be customized in the "file info panel" e.g. one sub item height could be set to 50px (or whatever unit) and it would be that size regularly and you could expand it to show whole content with right arrow like already today. Currently height is hard coded under the hood. You can only use option "Show more values at a time in the file info panel" so it should be possible to make height value something template maker could modify. Configurable height would help placing items a LOT within the current engine

It's a little annoying to have to restore custom templates. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the work that's gone into doing this, I just don't want to have reenable my custom template each time there's a build update.

Yes, but you can read other posts here to see how to set the version number of yours to a higher number.

Changing the version number on the file, from what I understand, is used to restore the previous templates, both the default one and the personal ones.

In my opinion, and I also believe MGD_King, with each new version the default templates should be updated, leaving the personal ones unchanged: is it possible?

See the first post.  Setting it to a high version will allow make it so that it is not overwritten by the new default version.

Surely, this must be a temporary solution before a stable version is launched with a long term solution of preserving a template of choosing?
