Media Center: Bad system or library files causing program to quit

(1/4) > >>

Maeghaus:
I solved a problem with my Main Library quitting suddenly a couple weeks ago by dropping an antivirus program (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,137807.0.html). MC was running fine for a few days and then it started quitting again, but now within ten seconds. This action happens in either MC 31 or 32 (I have both installed). I managed to make a new blank library before MC quit. Media Center stays running with the blank library loaded. That means one or more files must be corrupt in my MC Main Library. I have no clue if the files are part of the library content or related to Windows system operation. My inclination is Windows 11 Pro 23H2. I did not have an issue until the upgrade from 22H2. My Internet research hasn't given me help. No one varies from the basic group of solutions and most are useless.

At the same time, I am trying to solve a chronic Windows symptom of multiple program instructions crashing the system; it started in Windows 10. I know there's a common cause with MC and Windows. But I don't know where to start investigating. I feel it could be a registry origin; some articles hint at that but that's all they provide. Starting over with a new Windows installation and rebuilding isn't an option for me.

I am hoping to capture the screen showing all the errors that pop up when the system stops functioning properly. As a Windows system problem, it may need to be posted in some other forum, even if it may be connected to why my Main Library isn't working well.

Start with the windows EventViewer, check what is logged when an app crashes. If multiple apps are crashing then it may be an hardware fault, such as damaged memory or disk errors.

Maeghaus:
I am running a Clean Boot and this can help me narrow down the culprit(s). The PC has been up and running the basics the past few days. No conflicts or program crashes. I made a new, blank library for Media Center that produces no errors. A few moments ago I loaded my Main Library to test it but MC quit in less than 10 seconds. I got the New Library back up after several attempts. I've got something in my Main Library causing Media Center to silently crash. It quits so fast, I don't have time to generate a log manually. I might have log files from auto logging.

What I have are two unrelated performance issues: Windows (possibly one or more service applications) and Media Center (corrupt or incompatible files). I only need to report on my Main Library performance with Media Center. But I don't know where to start investigating. I'm searching for log files I can upload.

JimH:
Read the Logging topic on the wiki.

After a crash, look at previouslog.txt.  Near the bottom, you may find the answer.  Look for "crash" and also look for the last files opened.

Maeghaus:
MC32 still quits suddenly but extends to about 20-30 seconds instead of 10. The longer duration is the most common error. I've stayed in Clean Boot for more than two weeks investigating the Media Center problem in addition to finding Services conflicts in Windows. I started the Windows Services tests but have no idea where to begin.

For now, I have a couple JRiver logs as ZIP files. Some observations: MC31 works but only after restoring from an older backup. I don't know that it will remain that way when I use it to listen to music. I was playing music on MC32 with the imported good library but about 20 minutes shut off and now quits after 10 seconds. It won't stay on unless I restore from a last known good backup.
