Have you tried rebooting the system? Maybe change to a different USB port (one on a different USB controller if possible)?

The first part is kinda interesting too, it doesn't give off the libasound_module_conf_pulse error in my Mint virtual machine when using alsacap. The part about it being i386 is the most interesting thing here. You're not using the i386 (32-bit) version of Media Center, correct? You probably should be using the amd64 (64-bit) version. To check, the quickest way is in MC go to the Help menu > About Media Center... and in that window it should say (64-bit) at the top exactly like this...

If it doesn't say that, you're probably using the i386 (32-bit) version.

UGH!  Feeling stupid right now.  You are right on both points, it is the 32 bit version of JRiver, don't know how I missed that, but I'll get the 64 bit version and install that.  I rebooted and now I'm at least getting some nice sound out of it.  I still can't find the iFi menu where it lists the bitrates and bit depth available. Isn't there  some menu item in JR that tells what's happening to the signal?  Redid the terminal output (below) and at least Card2 looks promising now.  I'm not out of the woods yet, but there's hope at least...
Thank you!

I redid the terminal command:

Awsome Donkey,
I wasn't sure where to post this.  I looked at my install, which was done with this file MediaCenter-31.0.36.deb. I used that file because I think it said it would install JRiver more or less automatically, good if you're a noob.   I'm not sure what to download to get the 64bit version???

Thanks,

penger10

Awesome Donkey:
31.0.36 is a really old version of MC31. You can get the latest version here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,137411.0.html

You want the Linux amd64 build for 64-bit. Just make sure you remove mediacenter31:i386 first though.

Thanks for the link Awesome Donkey, guess I know what I'll be doing this morning!

Also a big thanks to mwillems for the heads up on system sounds not playing well with MC!

Today I ended up doing a clean install of Linux Mint & the proper 64bit JRiver MC file AND IT WORKS! My iFi zen DAC indicates the proper bitrates for the files I'm playing and the audio path on MC agrees.  I ended up using the iFi audio device preceded by Front:  Now the audio is playing great!  Thanks for the help everyone!

I only have a stereo (2 channel) system and I'm not sure what I need to do about playing videos from my library.  I don't get any dialog with my current Sound settings, just music and some effects.  Celluloid plays it fine, so I'm assuming my 'bit perfect' settings I like for might need to be changed for movies?

BTW, this is the output for the terminal command yet again:
