Feature request: look for cover art in PARENT music file folder
« on: February 21, 2024, 06:40:53 am »

For cover art location I use the setting "in the same folder as the file" .

For multi-disc sets  this means stocking every subfolder with (often identical) cover art.
I would find it helpful to extend the setting "in the same folder as the file" with the option if empty look in parent folder.

Album xyz [prefered cover art location]
|_ disc 1 [redundant cover art location]
|_ disc 2 [redundant cover art location]
etc.

terri - if instead of having a separate Album Name for Each Disc in the set you were to give each disc the same Album Name and make use of the Disc# field/tag to hold the Disk Number then there would be only 1 instance of the coverart

Hi, thanks for the fast response and tip.

I didn't realize that this works already in a lot of cases.
Unfortunately it doesn't cover i.e.  box-sets where I want to distinguish between discs because they cover separate themes, periods, instruments or such like. In such cases I use different album names.

Another issue I run into are the music file folder that have a SUBfolder with al the artwork (including a folder.jpg). Any ideas for that?

I realize these are not really issues when you're building a collection with MC, but I have quite an extensive collection already and was hoping to switch to MC as my main player. Unfortunately only about half my albums show cover art in MC and it's just not doable to reorganize or link all the missing cover art by hand.

In my case looking one level up and one level down from the music files folder would solve things. The level down actually accounting for most cases, so I'm afraid my feature request is in fact phrased upside down.
