IPOD and Running Is It Compatable?

Is IPOD and Running Compatable?

Since it has a hard drive inside I would think that the hard drive would crap out due to the pounding it would take.

Well, yes and no, depending who you talk to.  There are cases with armbands  (Mareware Sportsconvertible) that seem to work for some.  Also, from the ipodlounge, there appears to be less of a skipping problem with the 5GB versus the larger hard drives.

Other people have placed there Ipod in a "fanny pack" with light padding around it and swear by this method.  Others complain about it no matter what they've tried.

I personally don't run with it--I work out on a treadmill, bike or elliptical--so the ipod is not on my body when I'm exercising.

thats what i was thinking.

I can't understand why anyone would want one because of this.

normaly i would think that anyone with a portable mp3 player would be active, and this in it's self would make for not very good music for one.

also the damage it can cause to the heads on the drive would be the another thought.

normaly someone who would work out would maybe use the player for 1 hour or less and i think a MP3 player with flash (maybe 128 megs) would be fine.

I just did a test and ~s128 renders 33 files, and just over 2 hours of mp3 music at about 128kbps

I think some players will take the 256meg flash cards and i guess that woould be around 4 hours of music.

I just payed $60 for 128 megs of flash -$20 rebate = $40 not bad I thought

I just can't see buying a hard drive mp3 player if it is going to crash and at the price they want for it, since they are not cheep.

You're on the right track, King.

Although Apple claims that it's perfectly fine to go running with the iPod, it makes zero sense to me.  Folks that go running with their iPods report many instances of the device freezing up on them, requiring them to reboot it.  Personally, I think that if someone buys an iPod for the sole purpose of taking it jogging or running, they have bought the wrong mp3 player.

I mean, it's a hard drive with a read/write arm and spinning platters... jolting it constantly is just begging to destroy it.  Better to get a flash-based solid state player with no moving parts and leave the iPod to commuting, walkabouts, and general listening... leave the "jolt, jolt, jolt, jolt, jolt" of running to a player that won't die from it.

Hehe, why King... are you thinking about buying an iPod?  ;)

well yes and no.

i am currently trying to find out why my mp3 player does not work. if i can't get it to work i may reformat the computer and then try again. if that does not work i will buy a new player. I just was wondering about the drive question on the IPOD and if anyone had reports of problems.

I personaly don't use mine for anything more than walking and going for a short run.

The problem is i have not been working out latley and i may not have had the mp3 player working on this computer (maybe maybe not) i just can't remember.

Dunno about the iPod but TimB and running aren't compatable. ;)

I do most of my listening in the car and shopping.
