Something i think would be a great idea for MC9 is to set it up so that when you have your view schemes set up.....set MC9 up so that if the tag is left blank, then the tree wont expand. For instance, if i have a grouping level with "genre, custom 1, artist, album artist, custom 3" and i use "album artist" to group my albums, and i use "custom 3" as a spot to put the disk number for multi disk compilations, only a few of my files would expand to something other than (unassigned). So instead of having blank fields expand to (unassigned) make it so they do not expand at all. Very similar to the way Windows Explorer works. If a folder doesnt have any sub-folders, then the folder will not expand any further in the tree. Im thinking many people will agree with me on this one, and although i really know nothing about programming and such, it seems as if it would be a very minor change. Give me your feedback and tell me what you think.

lemme get this straight...

you have

genre
-custom 1
--artist
---album artist
----custom 3

custom 3 is disc # for mulitracks. what is custom 1? Is that the right order?

You're logic would work for that scenerio but what if someone had this:

genre
-artist
--album

if artist wasn't fill out, (unassigned), then album wouldn't show because it wouldn't expand. I know a lot of ppl would like to see what fields are not filled out when they expand it. If they know the album, then they can fill in the artist name or drag 'n drop (unassigned) values to other entries. drag 'n drop works great for genre because it will fill in the fields automatically.

Somone else on this forum had the idea of not showing (unassigned) if that's all there is, like an album. But if there are other tracks showing in the group, then show it. I would rather have that then seeing (unassigned) all the time too. Only problem would be knowing if you're looking at the right thing (artist, album, whatnot). That's were the icons would come into play just like in MJ8 (I hope they come back anyway).

thats actually what im referring to Dragyn. Only show nothing if the field is left blank, and more then likely, if youve got the tree set up in that manner, then youre going to have the artist name filled out.....certain issues of filling in missing parts like that can be solved by doing a search from the media library root view, then edit the file tags, and then they will fall into their corrrect place.....I correctly name all of my files before i even look at them in the selected view scheme. The deeper the level in teh view scheme, the less likely you are to have a lot of files classified, i.e. disk number in multi disk compilations. You may only have one in 50 with more than one disk, so it would only make sense to have just the ones with entries for the tag you have designated for the disk number to expand, all others would show no + or - expand icon.
