cannot convert pcm-bluray to dsd
« on: April 13, 2024, 02:56:46 pm »

I would like to use DSP Studio to convert 2ch PCM of Blu-ray Video to DSD Bitstream, but it will be played as PCM 48khz.
I tried several settings of DSP Studio such as Native and DoP, but it did not improve.
I tried both ASIO and WASAPI settings for the Audio Device, but this did not improve either.
Regular WAV and FLAC audio files have been successfully converted to DSD.
I would appreciate any help.

I wonder if it has to do with it also having video in the stream?
Or did you rip the audio from the BD to PCM files?
To test I ripped the audio from my file as FLAC and of course that encoded as DSD just fine.
I have ripped files using DVD Audio Extractor in .PCM format but MC will not recognize them.

To test video file, I tried this on my PC:

Set DSP Studio to Output encoding to 2x DSD in DoP (WASAPI) and then 2x in Native (ASIO driver used)
Verified that my music is sent in DSD format
Played a BD rip I had w/ PCM 24 bit 48 KHz - played as normal PCM

Set DSP Studio to None for encoding, played with 48 KHz upsampled to 192 KHz and it upscaled the audio just fine and sent as PCM.

I did not rip from BD to PCM file.
I played a Blu-ray Video after ripping it with MC, but it was not possible to convert it to DSD during playback.
Encoding to PCM 192khz is successful.
Then, when I tested whether DVDs and MP4s could be converted to DSD, all videos could not be converted to DSD and were output as PCM.
Thanks for the reply.

I am in the same situation.
When watching a video file, no matter how I set it up, it changes to PCM 48 kHz and direct connection.

I don't think it's possible to convert and output audio from video to DSD. If it's a DVD-Audio or BD-Audio disc you'll have to rip the audio to an audio format like WAV or FLAC and then convert it from PCM to DSD. For movies and shows I don't think it can work that way.

Unless someone corrects me (which I would be a little surprised if it's possible with video files) I think this is a non-starter unfortunately.

I am not really sure what is gained by putting the audio from a BD video into a DSD stream either way.
"But I want to" is usually a good reason to TRY something with MC. You can upconvert the audio in the stream to a higher sample rate but it won't put it in a DSD container. Pretty sure that's because there is no expectation for DSD to include video.

It seems like the OP can convert the Blu-Ray to 192 PCM, but not to DSD. So, it is not a general problem of converting to audio format, but rather specifically to DSD format. That seems like a limitation of the DSD process, not a limitation of converting to an audio format (like flac) in general.  Converting Blu-Ray to DSD may not be common, but it seems like if the process works for PCM it should work for DSD.
