Author Topic: Video file frame rate does not match file metadata [Solved]  (Read 174 times)

I used Handbrake to deinterlace some old TV shows from DVD. Most of them were originally shot on film with a frame rate of 23.976 and the conversion was seamless. However I have one in particular that is behaving a little differently.

The source file indicates that it is variable frame rate but still very close to 24 FPS. The converted file shows 23.976 in the metadata and that same information is displayed by VLC (perhaps just forwarding some static data). When I display the file on my projector the final frame rate is effectively 60 FPS. The diagnostic information displayed with Ctrl-J shows only a few dropped frames and the picture is stable. What is causing the file to be displayed this way?

I live in the UK, a PAL world, so I am not too familiar with NTSC but I do remember that some US DVDs can have 23.97 frame video that carries a 3:2 Pulldown flag instructing the player to repeat certain frames to effectively play the video at 30 frames/60 fields.

Maybe this is what is happening here?

If your projector supports 23.97 you can look at MC > Tools > Options > Video > Display Settings > Is "auto change mode" OFF? Are you outputting everything at "Desktop Settings" ?

Maybe turn "auto change mode" ON, and let MC actually output 23.97 (to match the file).

It turned out that only the first few episodes had this issue. When I used variable frame rate (set to 23.976), the problem was resolved.
