JRiver Update Method
« on: June 08, 2024, 03:30:18 am »

Why cannot mc just add new options upgrades to your current mc version like any other upgrade for any other program?  I don't have to download a new version of calibre or CCleaner or VLC media player when their is an upgrade and then delete the old version.  What is this issue with downloading the whole new program which obviously has problems coordinating with the old program's features?  Am I missing something?

Many people wanting to try a new(er) version of a software but who are concerned about it "breaking" their customized setups/configurations using their older versions of the same software, like the current ability to have the two versions exist side by side. This lets us decide if/when we're ready to switch to the new software version completely by uninstalling the old version. Experimentation or issues with the new software can be safely done without risk to the "known good" setup of the older version.

While some software like the ones you mention (most being freeware) use the install/overwrite model, there is the risk that the new version would not work as desired for the person who did the upgrade. In that situation, the new version would have to be uninstalled then the old version be reinstalled. Some software upgrades could also change the user's data files / database fields etc. in ways that are NOT compatible with the previous version of the reinstalled software which could require restoring a recent user created backup. If the user didn't have a recent backup, it could be a worst case scenario of unrecoverable user data loss. This scenario is fortunately much less common than in past but...

I have spent a considerable amount of time on my media collection/library over the years so I far prefer the "you can safely try the new version side by side with the old one then uninstall the version that you like least"  approach currently used by JRiver. Based on your recent posts with questions/concerns about upgrading from MC28 to MC32 with your VSTs, I think that the risks inherent in the other approach would be something that you'd prefer to avoid.

Each major version is its own separate application.

That is my disagreement with it and the purpose of this post.  Why?  Any advantage to having to reset everything when a new version is downloaded with a few minor tweeks?  It would seem more customer friendly just to update the version the customer has.  The previous poster indicated there might be bugs in the new tweeks that might not work or the old version might sound better so better to have a whole new program and get to choose the best, but it seems everything should be working properly before new things are added.  That is the way most programs work.  What is the philosophy behind this other than maybe this new version is not liked it has bugs so keep the old one until a new whole program that works is available

Clearly I should not try to write explanatory posts based on two misunderstandings in replies to posts to this original poster so to clarify again- my attempted explanation of the two different models was about software in general, not Media Center specifically.

@kirk0233 - In the world of commercial/paid software as opposed to free software, small(er) free updates/enhancements/bug fixes are made within the same "major version" as indicated by the version number ie MC28 or MC32 (as mentioned by Awesome Donkey). Major version upgrades for commercial software require payment and a new application for a variety of reasons, not least of which is the need to be able to charge customers for the larger enhancements/functionalities. As customers, our choice is to buy the new version or not as we prefer but as tzr916 points out this has been discussed before and seems unlikely to change.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend all!
