Installing MC32 -- Instructions and Questions
« on: February 27, 2024, 09:03:19 am »

MC32 is now available.

If you're upgrading from a previous version, please read these instructions
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,137399.0.html

Download files will be found first on the MC32 boards here.  They are also available on the Download Page.

You can retrieve your license here:  https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi

Any library and data from a previous version will be found and used by the new version.  If necessary, you can restore a backup:  https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Backup

Keep your prior version installed until you're happy with the new version.  Then uninstall the old one.

Please post any questions here.

I'm unable to install MC32. It goes to the  screen: "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" I click yes and nothing happens.

I deleted all the installtation temp files, but got the same result

I have installed the current Linux version of MC32 but it will not let me paste in my license number, the menu is grayed out and ctrl C does not work. I tried typing it in (way too much work for a 75 year old guy) but that did not work either.

Ctrl-v is paste.

When typing, watch out for the subtle differences.

0 and O are number and letter, respectively.

1 and l are number and letter.

75 is a young guy.

Updating Windows defender does not always work.  You need to open up detail (when big blue "STOP" box pops up) and select details.  Then scroll down and select "Run Anyway".

That's a Windows SmartScreen prompt. It happens with a lot of apps, at least until the app has been downloaded/used enough times for MS to start trusting it.

I'm unable to install MC 32. I've purchased the Master License and got the Registration via Mail. I downloaded MC 32 and when i'm starting the installation as a portable version the assistant says "the installation wizard can only run a portable installation if you have a license". After clicking "OK" it says "the installation wizard must be terminated due to a critical error, it is recommended to restart the computer and run the setup again. if the error persists, uninstall and reinstall". Actually im running MC 28.

You have to do a normal install first and license it.  Then you can do the portable install.

After I upgraded to MC32 and restored my MC28 backup, I no longer have the DLNA servers with their corresponding audio preferences, ie output format and equalizer settings. How do I retrieve those?

Installing MC32 -- Instructions and Questions
« Reply #12 on: March 09, 2024, 10:36:25 pm »

Hi, Newbie here.
I've had MC29 on two machines for a while. I recently upgraded one to MC32 without issues.  For my laptop, I just can't get MC32 to install.
It pops up an Information box saying "You are using Media Center 30 Windows to install a license for a different version.  Please download and and install the version that matches your license and then try again."
I did restore MC29 several times trying to get the upgrade to work.  I've never used MC30.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for the assistance.

I'm sorry but I don't understand.  The laptop has MC 29.  When I download MediaCenter320020-64.exe and try to execute it, I get Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.
When I execute MediaCenter32Windows-601190.mjr  I get the "Your are using Media Center 30 Windows to install.....
I've never used MC30 and have only downloaded MC 32 from your site.

Why won't it allow me to install MC32?

Try the 32 bit version of MC.

If you can't install MC32, the Install Key (mjr file) won't work.  It also only works for 14 days.  Restore your license after that.  You can read the wiki topic called Restoring a License.

Make sure Windows Defender is up to data and dont use any other antivirus.

This is a laptop (Win10) that has almost nothing but MC29 installed on it.  I've turned off Defender.  I bought the 64 bit Windows MC32 upgrade on my desktop and was able to download and install MC32.   To upgrade MC29 to 32 on my laptop do I need to buy another upgrade?  Any download of the 32 bit or 64 bit MC32.exe file refuses to run stating I don't have access.  I'm an old guy that's not very technical and am highly frustrated.  MC29 works...I've tried to run the MC32.exe with it open and closed.  What could I be doing wrong?  Sorry to be a pest.

It's no trouble.  Is Windows 32 bit or 64 bit.  It's in Control Panel > System.

But if they don't run, it's probably an antivirus problem.  Update Defender.

I bought MC 32 upgrade for MC 26. I downloaded MC32. I double clicked on download. I got a warning from windows Defender. I selected "Run Anyway". At this point nothing happens. I can't find the MC 32 anywhere. What am I doing wrong? Can it take a long time to "run" if I have lots of files?

OK I downloaded MC32 and ran the file. Got warning from Defender and clicked "run anyway". I updated Defender. I turned off all my anti virus software. Now I have a new download file that says "your license is for a different product" It never asked me for the new license code?? Still no MC32. I am not a younger guy. I have some computer knowledge, but mostly basic stuff. What do I do? I don't even know how you'll answer me. Will I get an email notification to link back here?

Trying to upgrade from MC24 to MC32, but the installer won't run.

I have tried with and without the relevant tasks in Norton Antivirus running, and after reinstalling Windows 11.  Nothing related was found in the Norton logs, but I see the following message in Event Viewer every time I try:

Activation for Microsoft.Windows.Apprep.ChxApp_cw5n1h2txyewy!App failed. Error code: Class not registered.
     Activation phase: No phase defined

The message appears in Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Apps > Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational.  The Event ID is 5961; I am finding a number of web posts about this ID, but nothing helpful in this situation.

Anybody else have this problem?

Update Windows Defender definitions.

Uninstall Norton.  Use only Defender.

I just set up a new Windows 10 system and uninstalled Internet Explorer. Now trying to install MC32 I'm getting a prompt to download Internet Explorer or exit the installer. Is Internet Explorer really a requirement to install MC32? IE is outdated software that hasn't had an update in over a year. I have the Edge Webview installed.

Did you install MC32 after downloading?  It is probably in your Downloads folder.
I backed up my MC26. I removed MC26. I bought MC32. I got the license for MC in an email. I downloaded MC 32. I double clicked on the downloaded file. I turned off all my anti-virus programs and extensions (ad blockers etc.). I got a pop up saying the file was not signed and clicked "run anyways". MC 32 never loads? When I try to get status and/or restart the installer it says "another instance of MC32 installer is already running." I can't find that "instance" to perform any operation on. It's been "running" for 48 hours. How do I correct this problem? Can I delete the installer and try again? How do I do that? I will need step by step help.

You did the right thing, but we can't fix the problem.  Try updating Windows Defender definitions.  Don't use any other antivirus.

No. It won't.

The MC32 Installation should pick up your MC20 library and import it, along with settings. That's a big jump though. Much has changed in those 12 major versions.

I would advise, in MC20, do File > Library > Backup Library.
If, after installing MC32... (be patient, it now copies thumbnails, and installs the Edge browser), these operations can take time and make it seem as if the installation has failed when it has not, but then, if, once completed, things 'ain't right', you can restore your recent backup, including settings, and move on from there.

It's a big leap. A lot has changed. You can check the change logs on the wiki if anything is confusing. The block builds list allows for searching within the page for a specific term, which is useful :)

Install MC32, then restore.  The mjr file is the Install Key and only works for 14 days.  Complete details are here:  https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License

Just upgraded from MC28 to MC32 and successfully downloaded the application by providing my MC28 registration number.

However, when clicking on the application, I'm getting the notice " You are using Media Center 28 Windows to install a license for a different version. Please download and install the version that matches your license and then try again".

I've trying to run the application from a NAS connected to my network. Is that the reason I'm getting this problem?

Then restore.

Oh, I have read WIKI about Media Server several times and unfortunately do not understand a lot of it. I was hoping I could ask a single question to help understand. Great product but support system lacking, In trying this I've made things worse and give up. One laptop is a new install and the other an update from MC25 I can only assume they are the same version and build of Media Center as I'm not sure how to check but sure don't want to ask.

Randy,
I'm going to split your questions to a new thread.

If you turn on Media Network in Options on your server, you can connect to it from MC on a client.  It then looks like your local library.  Trying it will answer a lot of your questions.

All you need to connect is the Access Key from your Server.  It's under Media Network options.

Hi I had been using MC27 on an older PC, I have now got a new lap top which has now nothing (except my music) on it, I now wish to put MC32 on it, Do I have to download and install MC27 on it (I have received the old license num) 1st then pay for and upgrade to MC32 or can I download MC32 and install straight away rather than messing about. I am now well into my sixties so would rather do the easiest.....any advice/instructions would be appreciated
Thanks Dave

Jim, Thank you for your replies. When I try help>about media ctr it seems shows me the version or build. My new install is 32.0.55 and the update on my old laptop is 32.0.47 both 64 bit. This may be causing some issues. I assume 32.0.55 is newest version and that I want to upgrade my old laptop and not sure how to do this. Under Media network options: use media network was already checked and I see an access key of ajHcDc. I clicked on access key and email an invitation to use this server but this failed. I also checked "authentication" and entered my username and password" not sure if this is correct".
Now getting error msg "problem running mC32 with 3 options, running on diff user acct, MC32 & media server both in setup and not responding. On the old version when I tried to go in today extracted and attempted reinstall then came up with error loading library, I clicked load another library and got my old back. I know I'm close but have spent so many hours on this and am so frustrated. Please try and steer me in the right direction with a detailed answer.

Can anyone assist at all on my request from June 18, I really would like to get this working. It appears the first thing I have to do is  update the 'build" on my old laptop so the 2 are the same version. I have gotten myself very confused and used up 3 or 4 of my restores. I'm thinking I have to download another version but it seems I am going in circles. Pretty inept at computer usage. TIA

Install MC32, if you haven't.

Restore your MC32 for Windows license.  I've just sent it to you.

You don't need to purchase anything.

If you get stuck, just say exactly what you have done and what you're not sure about.

Re: Installing MC32 -- Instructions and Questions

I have installed MC32. I tried to explain in detail back on June 18th what I was having trouble with. I'm not sure the easiest way to have the same "build" on the 2 laptops. I have no idea how or why they are different when I did them together. One was a new install and one an update from MC25. I find this very difficult and getting a direct answer is the worst part. I have used 3 of my restores on this and it feels like I am not getting anywhere. Folks that are not very proficient with computer usage sometimes need a little more direction. I am very confused at the point. I do not see what another restore will change.

There is no harm in re-installing MC32.

It will help if you provide details on what happens.  Adding the complaints only makes it more difficult to understand what you're saying.

Don't worry about using restores.  They can be reset.

A restore is different from an install.

1.  Download MC32
2.  Install
3.  Restore if necessary

This is explained in more detail here:  https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License

If you are still having minor version differences (32.0.47 vs 32.0.55) between your two pcs, it seems likely to be that you have them set to different update channels in Media Center. You can check this in Media Center by clicking Help - Update Channel then change them both to latest for now then click on the Help - Check for Updates option to ensure that they both move to 32.0.58 (current as of this message). If you want to use only Stable minor versions after this update, you can change both pcs back to the Help - Update Channel - Stable. Please note that minor version differences between the server (the pc whose library you want to use) and the client (the pc who will "pull" the library from the server) don't typically cause issues in recent years.

If you're no longer having issues with your "old library" on the "old laptop" that has been updated to Media Center 32 (beyond any build differences referenced above), it should be your "server" pc that shares it's library with the new pc (so that the library is the same between both pcs). On your old laptop it seems like you have already enabled the Media Network/DLNA option and have the  access key that will need to be entered into the "new laptop"  in Media Center. In order for the new laptop to be able to use the library from your old laptop, Media Center must be set in Tools - Options - Settings - Windows Startup to be Media Server on both pcs. Note that Media Server can only run a single instance per pc so if you have more than one user profile, only one can be in use at a time with Media Center/Server or you'll get errors.

Once the old laptop is configured as mentioned, you would go to the new laptop then ensure that you have enabled the Media Network/DLNA options and have told Windows Firewall when it pops up to ask that yes Media Center needs to to connect to public/private networks (this had to be done on the old laptop in order to get the access key from the JRiver servers). Once this has been done, you should be able to click File - Library then see a list of libraries available then select the one that starts with your old laptop's name on the network followed by (Library Server). Once you click on the old laptop's library, Media Center should tell you loading library. Once it has loaded it, you should be able to use the library from your old laptop to play on your new laptop independently. If you don't see the  old laptop library, I suggest rebooting both laptop to ensure that only one user profile is running on each and that Media Server is running on both; once this has been done, please open Media Center on the new laptop then check for the library server as mentioned; if it still doesn't show for some reason, you can manually select it by clicking File - Library - Library Manager then clicking Add Library. On the New Library screen which will appear enter the name that you want to use for your old laptop for clarity then select Library Server then enter the access key from your old laptop and click OK. This should then load the old laptop library for your use on the new laptop.

In order to keep things as simple as possible and not need to add username password / https  options, you will not be able to make any changes to the library contents/playlists/etc. on the new laptop but can on the old laptop. Changes to the library on the old laptop will require the new laptop to have both Media Center and Media Server closed then reopened to see/use the updated library.
