JRemote 2 request
« on: September 02, 2024, 12:09:32 pm »

I posted this request a few years ago and there was no real solution. I thought I'd try again. The original JRemote had a field for the date of the album release under the album name.  JRemote 2 is missing this field and it has bugged me ever since it was released. Please add the date field back so I can ditch JRemote 1.  ;D

I have attached a pic of the album banner in JRemote 1 just for clarity

JimH made the following suggestion:
On the server, in options, take a look at Media Network > Advanced > Customize Views ...

This doesn't work though. It also doesn't explain why the original JRemote still displays the date without any customized views alteration while JRemote 2 does not.

Following JimH's advice, I would go into the advanced media options as suggested and click customize views. I would create a new item under "Audio" called "date released" and select "date" under categories and hit ok. I'm not sure where this change is supposed to be viewed but I don't see anything changed on the album banner at the top of the screen.

I know this is a small request but it has bugged me because I didn't see a point to removing easy to find information. Plus it seems like it was a conscious programming decision made when coding the new remote. Sorry, this has almost become like a mystery for me to solve, lol.

Yeah, it's indeed something missing from JRemote2, which was in the original JRemote. Pretty sure it's been mentioned before in the past in one of the JRemote2 topics.

Confirmed that both [date] and [year] fields can be made to appear in the Library album listings of JRemote2, JRiver Panel, and MO 4Media, per customized entries in MC's:

Options > Media Network > Advanced > Customized Views for JRemote, Gizmo, Panel... > Show Categories in This Order > Edit > Expression to display (leave...) > [add custom expression here].

For a simple test, just add [date] as a custom display expression.  You will need to restart the Android app, and probably a good idea to re-launch MC.

If your view contains a category that includes the [date] field, the date should show up in the Library album listing even without customizing the display entries (leave section blank).

However none of the players show these fields in their Playing Now windows or Playing Now track lists - apparently the user cannot customize those areas and the date is not built in.

FYI:  In the Library album listings, I find MO 4Media does by far the best job of reproducing the Customized Views display text.  Insert char(10) to force a line feed if desired (ignored by Panel and JRemote2).  Also, MO 4Media top level Library album listings fully accommodate long text lines, wrapping and adding extra vertical space as needed.  At the next level down, in the album track list, the second built-in text line can run off the right side, but here this is a wise space-saving decision, since the album's full Customized Views display text appears wrapped around at the top of the track list.

Panel lets long text run together and get overlaid in the top level Library listing.  JRemote2 does worse - it just lets the text run off invisibly to the right side in a single long line.

My conclusion:  Your requested functionality is already available in the Library listing for all these players, while the implementation varies considerably.  However it will take a little customization to resemble JRemote1.

I'm not exactly sure how that would work in JRemote2, because it doesn't work like expected compared to the original JRemote. I can add a [Year] field (which by default music files use [Year] instead of [Date]) and have it appear that way but it's a bit clunky and doesn't appear in the top header like JRemote has it. There is a somewhat workaround though, when scrolling through Artists, Albums, playlists, etc. you can select the three dot button on the right side of a track and select Metadata and it will allow you to see all the metadata of the track/album including year.

However, I agree with the request above. Having it added in JRemote2 like it was in JRemote, when/if development starts up for JRemote2 again, would be much appreciated. As would adding it to the Now Playing window somewhere (and having a feature to disable the rating stars, which are wasted space for me as I don't use ratings).

I guess I should post in the JRemote2 topic with some issues I've noticed (e.g. my smartwatch can't detect playing now info at all anymore, nor can the Pano Scrobber app so last.fm scrobbing doesn't work for JRemote2) soon and add these to my wishlist.
