Window positioning with Mac commands
« on: September 06, 2024, 07:56:31 am »

I've been using MC for mac since version 20.  I'm aware that it uses a toolkit for the OS that is not exactly the same as the way most Mac apps are developed.

I've recently starting using a Mac program that let's you easily position windows on the screen.  Like telling a window to be exactly half of the screen on the left.  Or maximized in height, but keeping the same width.  Things that are probably familiar to most windows 10 or 11 users.  This program adds similar functions to the Mac.  The one I use is called Rectangle Pro.

I've noticed that MC32 does not respond to most of these commands.  It will move, but will not change size.  It would be great if MC could do this.

How much work would it be to allow MC to honor window movement and size requests via the OS like other Mac apps do?

Thanks for reading.

Brian.

Not sure. It's a bit surprising it moves.
I suppose knowing what events it's being sent might help.

If I could easily help, I would try.  If there's anything I can do, please let me know.

If it's difficult to gather the data, I understand.  I was just asking.

I would heartily second the request. I don't know whether bigentry uses the same program. I am using BetterTouchTool.
Similarly there is the possibility to change easily between programs in full screen mode by switching with two finger
from left to right or vice versa using the magic mouse. Here, too, MC is the only program on my Mac that can't do that.

I'm using Rectangle Pro.  Rectangle (standard) is free and works almost identically to Rectangle Pro.   I say this in case anyone reading this wants to try Rectangle out on their Mac.  It's quite good.

Messed around with rectangle a bit. It resizes other windows, like the options window but the main UI window is a special beast.

Thanks for giving it a try.  In the grand scheme of MC it's probably not all that important.

Mac OS Sequoia has this kind of windows position as a new system feature.
If you drag a window to the upper side of the screen it fills the screen.
If you drag it to the left or right side it fills half the screen on that side and
you can position another window on the other side.
Regrettably that isn't working with MC but with all other programs I tried.
Is there a possibility to make it work with MC, too?
It's extremely useful if one wants to exchange data between to programs.

Yes, MacOS 15 has a "snap to" area feature kind of like Windows.  It's awkward and weird.  For me, the only real utility of Rectangle is the hot key support.  Using a hot key to snap a window to a position and resize it makes sense.  It's fast and is a single defined action.  Trying to find the snap target is a poor user experience.

It's not just dragging the window with the mouse to a corner, it's much more as I just have seen: if you are going with the mouse cursor onto the green button on the upper left side of a window you have much more possibilities to change the position of the program window.
Regrettably it doesn't work with MC.

On of the most ANNOYING "features" of windows. I hate it.
