JRemote Port Forwarding
« on: September 08, 2024, 12:34:59 pm »

First post but a long time user and subscriber here.

Having issues since I got the latest gateway from my service provider. (Xfinity) aka Comcast.

I forwarded the 52199 port to the device and turned off the extra layer of security on the gateway to make sure something isn't going on in the background.

Searched here and internets in general with no resolve. Generally I am fairly technical and can figure things out but this had me stumped so I turned to here.

Essentially the connection from the tablet using jremote times out when connecting to the sever via ip or access code - with the code it shows the ip correctly still times out.

Any help or direction is appreciated!

By IP, do you mean external IP (e.g. what's shown on whatismyip.com) or the local IP address of the device MC is running on? If the latter it *should* work but if it's the former and you're trying to access your library outside your network your ISP may be blocking all port forwarding hence why external IP and access key doesn't work. Using the local IP address of the device MC is running on should work fine regardless of the ISP blocking port forwarding or not but I can't say absolutely there's no funny ISP playing on the router or something like that.

I just went through this myself with my new fiber ISP blocking all port forwarding and the only way I could workaround it is by using a VPN (ProtonVPN in my case) then using the port forwarding feature it has and setting MC to use that port.

For me, the advanced security on the Xfinity router blocked my forwarding. Never did get it to work. So, I agree you  should leave it off, at least until you establish a connection. Unfortunately, I do not have any suggestion other than that.

@DTC  You summed it up correctly this is the issue I am having. This should be low hanging fruit and it is over my LAN and not external.  Definitely some FA with the Xfinity Gateway as it worked prior to the switch without issue.  Was just curious if I was overlooking something and it seems not.

@Awesome The VPN seems excessive but hey if it works... was this using a tablet or a PC?

Any other suggestions?

Bummer all around in general.

Thanks for the responses and in advance!

The mini PC that MC is running on as a server, it also have the VPN app running on it too. I have to set the TCP port in MC's Media Network settings to use the port that the VPN gives for forwarding. In addition I also have split tunneling enabled in the VPN so it excludes all other apps except MC, so MC is the only app connecting through the VPN. The only annoying bit is if the VPN disconnects the port used for forwarding changes so I have to change the TCP port in MC to reflect this but once it's done, I can connect via access key via my phone for example outside of my network and it connects even though my ISP blocks port forwarding.
