Gapless seek in videos still not working
« on: September 20, 2024, 11:33:41 pm »

MC 32.0.58, my old problem is still there: frequently I need to jump backwards and forwards while watching videos, by clicking left and right arrows on my computer keyboard. The annoying old problem is that the volume fades in whenever I do this jumping, despite Options being set in the Audio section

- Switch tracks: Gapless
- Seek: Gapless
- Stop: Immediate
- Pause: Immediate

I am sure this does not depend on Microsoft Windows because, when I do the same with PotPlayer, this fading in and out doesn’t happen.

Any solutions?

All of those settings are for AUDIO, they only affect behavior when playing music files not video files. I can't think of any settings in MC that can make the volume fade when jumping around in video playback.

Can you give more details on your setup:
-video output device
-audio output device
-windows version

Video output device
- Graphics card nVidia GeForce RTX 3050
- Monitor Dell Ultrasharp U3223QZ

Audio output device
- Motherboard AsRock Z790 PG-ITX-TB4 with its Realtek driver and Equalizer APO

Windows 11 Pro, Version 23H2

Anyway, I think that the operating system and the hardware are not responsible for this fading in of the volume, otherwise it would happen with other players as well, such as PotPlayer and Windows Media Player, which instead don’t show this issue.

It may be due to using a separate audio device when playing videos. I would suggest just using an HDMI connection from the RTX3050 to the monitor for both picture and sound. The try:
1. Tools > Options >  Audio > Audio Device  > set to "nvidia high definition audio [WASPI]"
2. Then right below that click ...Device Settings and check the box for "open device for exclusive access".
3. Under Bitstreaming > choose "Yes (HDMI)"
4. Restart your PC
5. Run MC and test if you still have the same issue.

NOTE: In MC you can use different audio devices for video playback vs audio playback using Zones.

I have done all your steps, but it doesn’t change the result: whenever I jump somewhere else in the video, the volume turns automatically to zero and then fades in.

Look under Tools > Options > Audio > Volume > Volume Mode > set to "Internal Volume".

Keep trying each of the different Volume Modes to see which one might help.

They don’t make a difference. With “Internal volume" I can’t hear anything, while with “Disabled volume“ I can hear the sound normally, but the fading in effect is still there. This fading in does not happen when I play audio files.

Is your keyboard set to make any "sounds" when pressing keys?
What if you turn OFF all Windows "System Sounds"?

Dang, you got me stumped. This has never happened to me over the years using many windows PC's and many versions of MC.... Hopefully someone else will have some ideas.

Thank you for your patience in thinking about all of these suggestions.
Unfortunately last suggestion as well doesn’t make a change: in

Tools > Options > Audio > ...DSP & output format

all squares are unticked and there are no plugins installed.

Now I have even put a video on Youtube so that you can see my problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu4CCA9bPEc

Options has a search window at the bottom.  Search for volume and try changes.

Hmm, I watched the video several times but it's very difficult to hear the problem. If I am hearing something, it's really short lived... Perhaps I can't fully hear it because of the content, or because of when the seeks occur, or because of how quickly it's jumping around.

Anyways, so more things to try:
Do you use the onboard audio at all? for some external speakers playing music or gaming or something? If not, I would recommend just disabling it in the mobo bios. At least for testing to rule it out.

In MC, goto Tools > Options > Video > General Video > Video Mode.
-Try checking the box for "Hardware Acceleration", then test.
-Try "Red October Standard", then test.
-Try "Red Ocotober JRVR" and open JRVR settings > Advanced > Rendering > check the box for "Use Presentation Queue", then test.

BTW, DSP is not engaged at all when using Bitstreaming HDMI.

There is no "Rendering" option in my JRVR settings > Advanced.

Moreover, I would like to check with any of you: could any of you, please, make a video where I can see that you jump to other parts of the video and automatic zeroing volume, followed by fade in volume, does not happen?

Oh you are on MC 32... I would recommend trying MC 33...

Are actually SEEING "automatic zeroing volume" somewhere on your screen? Where would I look in your video to see that?

I have installed MC 33; tried "Use Presentation Queue", but it doesn’t solve the problem.

"Automatic zeroing volume" is not something that shows in the screen, it is something that I can hear. When I jump to another part of the video, the volume gets immediately, automatically, muted (which I called "automatic zeroing volume"), and then, in about half a second, it fades in until it reaches its normal level. This is the problem I would like to eliminate. I would like, when I jump to another part of a video, no volume muting, no volume fading, just jump, as it does with audio files.

This behavior is hard-wired and cannot be controlled, sorry.

If “hard-wired” means that it has to do with something unchangeable in my computer, then I think it is not true, because, as I said, PotPlayer and Windows Media Player don’t have this issue.
So, I think I have to understand that here “hard-wired” means that it is a feature of JRiver Media Center that cannot be changed.

Yes, that's what Hendrik meant. Meaning it's hardwired in Media Center itself and can't be changed/controlled.

It is possible volume protection is causing this.  Go to options/audio/volume, and if the Volume Protection box is checked, try unchecking it and see if that solves your problem.

Volume protection is unchecked.
I think the definitive answer is this one.
This means that everybody who has given an answer to me has actually the same issue.

This means that everybody who has given an answer to me has actually the same issue.
That is a pretty bold claim to make on behalf of… well… everybody! :)

I actually offered my suggestion because I don't have this issue and thought that turning off volume protection might resolve it, but since you don't use that setting either, clearly it is not the issue.  Rereading some of this thread I did see this from trz916:

Hmm, I watched the video several times but it's very difficult to hear the problem. If I am hearing something, it's really short lived... Perhaps I can't fully hear it because of the content, or because of when the seeks occur, or because of how quickly it's jumping around.
With the above in mind, I jumped back and forward via the keyboard arrows, and there is indeed a brief (very brief - I estimate 0.1 seconds, maybe 0.2) volume fade-in. So you may be correct that this is something all MC users experience, but clearly it is not something that all MC users notice… I never have.  That said, now that I am aware of this it will probably start to annoy me in the future - Thanks! Haha.

If you can confirm the duration over which this takes place is indeed that short (which was not at all clear to me from your initial post), then it would appear this is indeed an MC specific "anomaly".

I have made a new video where you can hear very clearly and compare the fade in effect.
The first player is Windows Media Player, the second one is Potplayer, the third one JRiver Media Center.
It is a simple tone made with a frequency generator, where the volume is always the same level all along the video.
Don’t consider the clipping: it happens because I needed to keep the volume a bit high, while the speakers are small.

That is a spectacular demonstration of the issue… Nice job!

For me personally the fade in/out with dialogue isn't too noticeable and is tolerable - but as your video illustrates, there is no denying the issue exists.  Perhaps it will move the developers to rethink MC's volume behavior (unfortunately though, probably not).

Maybe I never noticed this because I have Volume Disabled in MC, and use the volume controls of the external device (TV or AVR).

Where did you get that 440Hz clip? Can you make it available to all for testing?

I have made a new video where you can hear very clearly and compare the fade in effect.

There are many free online YouTube converters, just Google it, you just need to put the youtube url of the video, they convert it and in a few seconds you can download an mp4 version.
