MC Server stops working unrequested
« on: October 23, 2024, 12:56:40 pm »

On a Win 10 HTPC with updates turned off, what would cause the MC (32) server to either turn itself off or crash for no apparent reason with no shutdown or change in the operating condition of the HTPC?  Logging into MC will bring up the player and the server without a problem.

Thanks!

What I have seen in past is that sometimes "corrupt/not perfect" MP4 videos being played/tried to play would crash the Media Server on the server. Have you noticed what client pcs are doing before or when you see these server errors?

Out of curiosity, I can understand why you might not want to move to Win 11 in an update but are you turning all updates off? I'm wondering if the issue could be certificate/cypher/Edge View/ web related. It might be worth running any updates (other than Win 11 if you don't want it or drivers from MS instead of the hardware manufacturer).

Hi craigmcg.

The HTPC is of a vintage that Win11 is not a possibility, and I may consider replacing it at some point.  The reason why I am not allowing automatic updates is because I manually check for updates on a routine basis.  Maybe I should turn auto updates back on?

What seems to happen with my situation is that I will be watching or finished watching a movie on one of my client PCs hooked to my television via HDMI and shut the client's instance of MC and the computer itself down.  I go to watch a movie or listen to some audio the next day or so and find that the server has shut down on the Win10 HTPC without any indication of what caused it to do so.  The HTPC is set to never shut down so I am pretty sure it didn't reboot itself and, because it starts up and boots without the need for a password, if it did reboot for some reason then the MC server should automatically restart as well.

It remains a dillema.

That is a dilemma- I too have a headless "vintage" pc that won't run Win 11 that is my MC server (it's more reliable in my experience to have the library running on a pc that can use a static IP and doesn't have much software "experimentation" done on it).

A couple of quick questions - could you confirm whether the client pcs are auto-starting with with Media Server running (or both MC and the server)? Would it be feasible to run any "non-driver" updates since you last did on all your PCs to ensure that they are all running the current versions? Would it be feasible if you still get the same library server behavior if you leave the client pc that last played a the movie in your example powered on but with the TV off? Do you have CEC enabled?

I'm not an expert but I'm not seeing anything obvious so maybe some experimentation might provide more info.

Craig,

The clients do not AutoStart server when booting.  I did a quick check for updates, including drivers, and installed everything except for those "cumulative preview" updates that Microsoft likes to tout.

The next time I use a client, I will keep the pc running and either shut down the TV or watch another input to do some further analysis.

Do you know if MC server has a built-in logging capability to trap "events" that would force a shutdown?  Maybe the act of shutting down the client PC's Bluetooth keyboard/mouse has some sort of effect................

I don't know but it's worth a try to enable logging on both the client and server pc before a try doing the same thing that fails and then again as suggested. There might be some events added to the Windows event logs too but that's over my head.
