Duplicate Tracks & Album Artist duplicates
« on: October 24, 2024, 06:54:20 am »

I'm using jr 33.3

I have had this problem for several years but have not ever done anything about it. It was infrequent and frustrating but not debilitating. But I am tired of fixing and hope to find a solution.

Two issues,.....

1. For no known reason I will go to play an album and many of the tracks are duplicated in my JRiver library. It is random and is only found in a relatively small number of my 4400 albums, though I'm finding it more often. Usually only a few tracks but just yesterday I discovered several albums of one artist where all tracks are duplicated. In my album folders no such duplicates exist for any occurrence i discover. What possibly could cause this?

2. Randomly I will discover Album artists names duplicated....Ex; "Chicago/Chicago". This seems to occur more often after just adding an album to my library but yesterday i also discovered this with a couple artists I haven't added anything to in quite a while.

I very much would like to know if I'm doing something to cause this and/or how to keep it from occurring. Of course, I'd like to also eliminate all duplicate tracks but I did try that once following some instruction I found on the forum and really messed up my library! I had to rebuild it from scratch. Would like to avoid that!

Thanks

Look closely to see where the duplicate files are, their file type, and how they are named.

Well, that was a smart suggestion.  )

The first instance i looked at I discovered, in one album, the dups are from a playlist. I looked and the "Music" folder I import from includes my Playlist folder. I assume i need to move that ouit of the folder jr weatches for importing?

Is there an easy way to eliminate all of those albums impacted?

Thank you, Jim.

Unless you have backups, be careful. Playlists shouldn't cause this issue. The single most common cause of the described issue is cue files.

If they are the root cause, entries in your library generated from the contents of a cue file will have something like ";1", ";2" without quotes, at the end of their filenames in the MC library. Are you seeing anything like that?

You can use search to isolate a directory or type of files, then delete them.

I'm not very familiar with cue files, though I've seen them before. I looked in both the folder the album files are in and the folder with playlists and see no cue files. The only files in the music folder are the wav & jpg files and in the playlist file only Media Center File & M3U Files exist.

This is what the location path looks like...

DMediaplex/music/playlists\../Hi-Res WAV Files/Tome Petty/Wildflowers and All The Rest (24bit 2020 Box)/

I used the search function and the result did pull up several files . But I don't understand ...there are only the above playlist files and no actual track files.....

Well, that's a scary looking filename... double dots and a switch from backslash to forward slash level separators...

My immediate thought was... "I wonder if there's a NAS involved here somewhere?"

Either way, I'm out. Apologies for the noise and distraction. As soon as we get into forward slashes in filenames, I'm out of my comfort zone and I would hate to give you the wrong advice that could prove costly to you.

Good luck :)

Marko, thanks for your candor and effort. I get it...I love running my system which includes multiple sources, etc and are quite complicated...for me, anyway. I can only trouble shoot so far. Yes....my files are on a Synology NAS. And the filename/location is completely confusing.

My problem with duplicates showing up in many albums is the result of those original album tracks also being used in Playlists. Every duplicate I've checked so far are from a playlist. I tested one track....in my duplicate view, I deleted one duplicate track from "Media Center"....the one from the playlist...The good news is that it eliminated the duplicate but it also removed that track from my playlist.

Why are all those tracks that are in a playlist duplicated in the album from which they were added to the list from? I could really use some guidance!
