Is MC 32 more slow to start in Windows 11? [Solved]
« on: October 25, 2024, 11:30:32 am »

Hi,

I have noticed that JRiver takes much longer time to start up after I did a new clean installation with Windows 11 pro. In Windows 10 it felt like an eye blink only. Not so with Windows 11. The first times I noticed this I was thinking that I did not click the icon for JRiver properly and clicked again and again. Is that only me or is this same for others as well? I just want to know if I maybe did something wrong when installing JRiver or maybe there is some setting I am not aware of when using Windows 11?

Sorry for not finding the "MC32 for Windows" section correct placement of my question.

No.  There's no difference.

Antivirus sometimes causes problems like what you describe.  Configure Windows Defender.

Depending on how you re-started, it could also be analyzing files, building thumbnails, etc.  In that case, it will get faster.

I will check into Defender if there is something. But I do not think that.

About the analyzing, is that not what only happens the first time when importing the CD and after that it is stored? Anyway I have not changed anything about that. Just done as before in Windows 10. I am only analyzing the volume leveling thatīs all.

This can happen with Defender if it's not tamed.

I have tested around now and noticed that it also is slow if I stop JRiver and start it again 30 seconds later. Without restarting Windows. I think that rules out Defender or not? Defender does a qucik scan when starting Windows only. Defender never finds anything.

How can/should I "tame" defender?

Yes it is. There are 2 drives + a SSD disk. On the SSD I have all the software. And the 2 harddrives contains flac files and movies. So they are separated from all the software. And I only use this computer for media but there is the office package just in case. But not use that so much. I have another computer for that.

Hello again,

I have now excluded all the files, file types and folders according to the link from awesome donkey. Unfortunately there was no difference. It takes about 20 seconds for JRiver to start up with Windows 11. Before this with Windows 10 it was just 1-2 seconds. Any thoughts someone?

Thank you, Jim
There is nothing like that. And besides it was a clean install both Windows and MC32 shortly after. Is 20 seconds a long time? I mean 20 seconds does not sounds like long time but when looking at the empty screen and waiting it feels very long. How long is normal would you say with Windows 11?

Same speed in Win11 or 10. This sounds like a network/DNS timeout which usually takes between 20 and 30 seconds.

Try creating a new blank library and see if MC starts up fine with that one.
Do you have any other Antivirus or Antispyware installed? Any unusual hardware or software config? Is your Windows on C: ?
You should also collect an MC debug log (Help->Logging). It will contain timestamps and show if any step is taking too long.

I do not have any other antivirus or Antispyware installed. Or any unusual hardware or software.
Windows and also JRiver is on C:\.
I made a debug log yesterday and also on today. The one today is with the computer fresh started. No other software more than Windows has been running. I attach the logs here.

I will create a blank library and test. But I have to read how to do that so that might take some time.

Your PC or router or ISP is blocking access to this page - MC tries to access it at start up and times out after 20 seconds.:
https://files.jriver-cdn.com/mediacenter/channels/v32/active

Code: [Select]

You can try opening that page on your browser, it should work instantly (you should get a download dialog).

That could be the Windows Firewall's doing if it works in a web browser but not MC32 itself. I've seen weird issues happen with it in the past, e.g. it blocking MC's plugin downloads silently. You'd have to enable inbound and outbound connections for the mediacenter32.exe file in Windows Firewall's settings.

I tried to open https://files.jriver-cdn.com/mediacenter/channels/v32/active in my browser by clicking on it and it look like it did not open as you wrote.

I then checked the Firewall inbound and outbound. Please see attached. Inbound is enabled and allowed. In Outbound there is no "Media Center 32" but there is "Media Center Extenders" and they are NOT allowed. Should I Allow or should I create a new rule: Media Center 32? Or maybe both?

By default, Win 10/11 allows all outbound connections unless you or some app changed it. Check if your Firewall says so like in the screenshot below. If oubound is enabled like shown, then the issue is something else. Please run these commands on a cmd prompt, one at a time:

nslookup files.jriver-cdn.com
ping files.jriver-cdn.com
ping -4 files.jriver-cdn.com
tracert -4 files.jriver-cdn.com

"Media Center Extenders" is unrelated.

The 3 first commands in command prompt went well. But the last one "tracert" had timeouts. Please see attached. You want to see attached screenshot of the first 3 as well that did not have timeouts?

My Firewall says same as your screenshot about outbound connections.
Outbound connections that do not match a rule are allowed.

You have a routing issue. You may want to try two things before contacting your ISP:
  • Unplugging your modem for 10 minutes and plugging it back in. Flushing your DNS cache (ipconfig /flushdns) isn't a bad idea either.
  • Investing in a high-quality dedicated VPN so you have more control and support over your internet routing.

A few timeouts in the middle of tracert are normal.

@JRiver

It looks like the AWS Global Accelerator instance for Sweden is down or misconfigured. This can be a DNS issue (your ISP pointing to the wrong instance for files.jriver-cdn.com), some ongoing AWS problem, or perhaps someone at JRiver needs to login to the AWS console to check for any possible errors/warnings, or restart some EC2 VM instances.

- files.jriver-cdn.com is resolving to ac18fa6e66d66d15d.awsglobalaccelerator.com on your machine
- https://ac18fa6e66d66d15d.awsglobalaccelerator.com/mediacenter/channels/v32/active is timing out - the server is not responding

There's still a chance this is caused by your ISP/DNS as BryanC says, but the ping/traceRT are reaching the final destination so I don't think it's a routing issue.

Possible workaround - you can try forcing windows to go to a different server by adding this to your "hosts" file:
Code: [Select]
104.26.12.107 files.jriver-cdn.com
Changing your DNS Server to 8.8.8.8 may also work.

I can not open that link in Firefox too. Also when I use Edge I can not open it. And I can not do that on my second computer too. On that one I have a VPN. I donīt know if that has anything impact? The media computer donīt have VPN.

If I understand you correct I must wait for JRiver to check the AWS console? Shall I contact them or are they reading your effort to help me already you think?

Update:
After reading your last email I changed the DNS server as you suggested and that WORKED! JRiver started after 1 second!
You are my hero!  :)

I did not change DNS over https. That is set to off. Is that OK or should I have 8.8.8.8 there too?

Thank you all! Zybex, BryanC and Awesome Donkey! It is very much appreciated.

So next time when I change computer or are doing a clean install I will not forget to change the DNS server. And also I will for sure save the workaround in the "hosts" file. I have still not tried that out as I did choose the easiest way first.

You're welcome!
If 8.8.8.8 works then it's best not to touch your hosts file. No need to change DNS over https, but it doesn't hurt either.

I'm on 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) for over 5 years now, no issues so far. There's also 1.1.1.1 which was called OpenDNS but now belongs to Cisco, so wither way you're stuck with an US company... if you're privacy-minded, keep testing your ISP's DNS to see if the issue is eventually resolved there, then you can remove the 8.8.8.8 configuration.

edit: correction, 1.1.1.1 belongs to Cloudflare, not Cisco. Still american.

Hmm, I didn't know about 9.9.9.9, looks like my new DNS service :)

Quad9 is a global public recursive DNS resolver that aims to protect users from malware and phishing. Quad9 is operated by the Quad9 Foundation, a Swiss public-benefit, not-for-profit foundation with the purpose of improving the privacy and cybersecurity of Internet users, headquartered in Zürich. (wikipedia)

9.9.9.9 - malware blocking, DNSSEC
9.9.9.10 - malware blocking, DNSSEC, ECS
9.9.9.11 - unsecured (resolves everything, no blocklist)

8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) is a regular or "plain" DNS, meaning DNS queries aren't encrypted so your ISP can still intercept that data on their side. Using DNS-over-HTTPS means your DNS queries are encrypted hence it's much more secure (and nicer from the privacy standpoint) and would be recommended to use. The DNS-over-HTTPS address for Google DNS is https://dns.google/dns-query which can be used in Windows itself, and all the major web browsers support it as well. There's other DNS protocols like DNSCrypt (which requires an extra app to use, though I would use DNS-over-HTTPS over it personally), DNS-over-TLS (which I wouldn't recommend as ISPs can technically block this) and DNS-over-QUIC as well.

1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare DNS) is the alternative, with its DNS-over-HTTPS address being https://dns.cloudflare.com/dns-query. Usually Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS is probably going to be the fastest one, depending on geolocation.

Quad9 is also decent and is the default upstream DNS used in AdGuard Home (like Pi-Hole, but better). Speaking of AdGuard I personally use their AdGuard DNS Non-filtering DNS server (I use DNS-over-HTTP/3 which is the "next generation" DNS-over-HTTPS and it's pretty darn fast if I say so myself) though I also do have a subscription to their personal AdGuard DNS service that has customizable domain-name ad-blocking without needing to use HOSTS files or Pi-Hole/AdGuard Home that I could use with some devices that don't have any sort of ad-blocking. It's great. :D

OK, I can try the ISP DNS later again but otherwise I am OK with 8.8.8.8. or 1.1.1.1.
I have tried out 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 on the secondary and that works fine too. JRiver is fast as the lighting!

Yes, because it works now I will not touch the hosts file. Not rock the boat as they say :-)

I have actually now changed DNS in my other computer too.  Now that we are talking about DNS I remember that I have changed in my Android phone as well some time back but that was to NextDNS. the reason for that was less ads and such and it works fine.

It looks like DNS is another science to dive into! I will try out more after reading both your comments about that. Looks like 9.9.9.9 is worth a try too.
But not today as it is over bedtime already here in Sweden:-)

Thanks again and bye for now,

Indeed, changing the DNS on Windows is easy and you don't have to mess with the HOSTS file or anything like that. In fact since you're running Windows 11 it'll give you the option to enable DNS-over-HTTPS too. I really wish Linux (or more specifically NetworkManager/GNOME) would gain easy DNS-over-HTTPS support in the UI sometime soon. :-\

Glad to hear it's working for you now. :)

I just change the DNS on the router itself. This works best as all phones/PCs will then get the router as DNS (via DHCP), which then forwards to 8.8.8.8 instead of the ISP's.
