WMA Crash
« on: November 11, 2024, 05:10:31 am »

MC closes after a few (1-12) minutes after starting playback music. My music is on Synology NAS. I've tried Mediamonkey, Musicbee and AIMP and all of them are stable and play for days in a row, even if I start all three of them. So my question is: what setting in MC am I missing to prevent MC from shutting down?
I've upgraded to the latest version without success.
And I disabled auto-import.

Please turn on logging and report the crash via the Help->Logging menu entry. It should provide a crash dump on windows as well.

I turned on logging. After MC crashed, I choose "report a problem", which gave me the log report attached.
Hope this can clarify the problem.
Greetings,
Alex

Hi, I've just send the file thru normal outlook email, and also (because of its size 26 MB) with Wetransfer.
Greetings, Alex

Try renaming the file tmp.wma to see if it plays.

I'm riddled because I was able to import and analyze the file.

Your log showed it crashing on that file:
1305466: 57908: Playback: WMAFileInfo::Open: Start
1305466: 57908: Playback: WMAFileInfo::Open: Open: \\BrainWolf\music\Music - 2012 and earlier\Roy Harper - Born in Captivity --- CD\Work Of Heart_ No One Gets Out Alive _ Two Lovers In Th Moon _ We Are The People _ All Us Children (So Sadly Far Apart) _ We Are The People (Reprise) _ No One Gets Ever Out Alive (Finale).wma
1305466: 57908: Playback: WMAFileInfo::Open: Calling Internal_Open
1305466: 57908: Playback: WMAFileInfo::Open: Open return value: 0
1305466: 57908: Playback: WMAFileInfo::Open: Finish (0 ms)
1305466: 57908: Playback: WMAFileInfo::Internal_Close: Start
1305466: 57908: Playback: WMAFileInfo::Internal_Close: Finish (0 ms)
1305466: 57908: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Unhandled exception -- program crashing
1305466: 57908: General: TopLevelExceptionFilter: Message: 15, wParam: 0, lParam: 0

I'll play a little more tomorrow. Try renaming that one file to a different unused extension (tmp) and see if you can run longer.

Thanks.

Hi, I even removed the folder from the NAS. I am playing now for almost half an hour, which is very long considering what I could do recently. I'll consider this one as solved, if not I will reply again. However, I am still very curious what the problem with this file could be? If you have any updates, please feel free to keep me updated. Sincere greetings, Alex

Did you enable the "support extra long filenames" option?

Is the filename on your NAS exactly like shown above (with many underscore chars) or does the actual name have any special character or punctuation like colons, slashes, etc. ?

- name is exactly same
- I did not enable support long names, but will do it right away  :)
>> Shall I put the folder back afterwards to give it a try?

(MC still running smoothly ;))

Note: I see that "support long names" was already checked.

This could certainly be a NAS issue.

Ok, but why does this not happen in other programs like AIMP, Musicbee, Winamp or Mediamonkey?

I think I figured the crash out. The filename over 260 characters wasn't supported by the WMA plugin.

In a coming build:
Fixed: The WMA plugin could crash on paths over 260 characters.

We were using a fixed size buffer but there was no reason to not just use our string object (which can hold any size).

Thanks a lot for the help :)

So I was testing your file thinking it was a file problem, but it was actually a filename problem. I recreated basically the same path on my drive and then it crashed.

We really appreciate your help.
