Windows Volume control setup - JlSounds
« on: February 19, 2025, 09:47:45 pm »

Hello,

I just got Ver 33 setup on my windows 10 PC. I have a JLsounds USB to I2S converter and a dedicated DAC I am using. I want to use the volume control on my Dell USB keyboard to control the volume. Like I do with Spotify, youtube, windows media player etc. BUT, I also want JRiver for Hi-rez playback.

JLsounds usb board has the option in JRiver for the Windows direct sound, Jlsounds ASIO, JLSounds Kernel, and a few other options. When I set it to ASIO or KERNEL the windows volume control does work. only when I set it to the windows default direct sound setting. which I know I don't want for best playback.

I have seen other post's with mention of standard and Internal settings etc. but no matter how I set them, they don't work...I am missing something.

Can anyone offer me some assistance?

There is an option in MC to use "Media Keys".

The options page has a search window.

It's not a JRiver problem.  You need to follow the directions from the manufacturer of the device.

It might be easier for you to get volume working without the device first.  Conversion may be the obstacle.

You said above that ASIO does work.  Why not use it?

Do a Google search for Exclusive Mode.  Another app may be using it and preventing use by JRiver.

ASIO plays music but the volume control does not work. I also tried the JLsounds Kernal streaming and the windows volume does not work either.

Hi,

I use a Topping DM7 DAC with the Thesycon 5.72(current) ASIO driver with Media Center set to system volume and ASIO. Changing either the Windows volume in the system tray or in Media Center using the volume control works fine for me. This makes me think that the issue is on the JL device or driver side, not JRiver.

If you haven't already done it, I suggest that you reach out to JLSounds about their recommended settings etc.

Here are my available options.

if I select any of the "Direct Sound" options, either the first option "Default Audio Device [Direct Sound]" or the last option, "Analog Output (i2soverUSB) [Direct Sound]", then the windows volume control works. My understanding is that this is not the best option for sound quality?

any of the other options will play audio at full volume and the windows volume control does not work.

Have you tried the Analog Output (I2SoverUSB) WASAPI then set the MC33 volume setting (right click on the speaker icon near the top left from the MC33 main screen) to internal? If not, give it a try.  Note that some devices with Thesycon ASIO drivers like Topping do not play nicely when WASAPI is used so since the JLSound looks like it does too this may not work. As I mentioned I have the Topping DM7 using the current Thesycon/Topping ASIO driver 5.72 and the MC33 system volume works fine for me to change the volume.

Out of curiosity, it looks like you have ASIO4ALL installed, what benefit do you get from this? I had thought that ASIO4ALL was just a wrapper to allow ASIO use for devices which do not provide an ASIO driver. If you're not using it for other playback softwares, it might be worth uninstalling to see if it is fighting with anything else like the driver/JRiver.

Good luck.

I added the asio4all driver when i didn't see the JL/Theysycon asio version. once i got J33 and Foobar installed, then I saw the option. it will uninstall it. I will give your suggestions a try. I figure there HAS to be something i have missed.
