A general question about options for up-mixing to surround sound, primarily for music sources...
Currently running 7.1 surround via HDMI from a PC to an AVR with speakers equalized and time aligned using REW.
Multiple subs (some DIY, some commercial) are all driven from the single LFE channel of 7.1 with a compromised/combined EQ/delay from REW. The various SW's have very different equalization targets.
Very pleased with resulting sound field, except for the bass
HDMI interface is limited to 8 full bandwidth audio channels, so 7.1 JRSS up-mix fully consumes the HDMI bandwidth. I'd like to re-purpose the 2 rear/back channels to be individual SW channels using DSP PEQ routing.
Here's the question: Which is the best approach:
- Mix the back/rear channels into the side surround channels? If so, with what relative volume and/or delay
- discard/over-write the back/rear channels with additional LFE/SW channels?
- upmix to 5.1 and add two extra channels for LFE/SW?
- Something else?
