Update video tag "name" from the file's actual name
« on: December 16, 2024, 06:23:42 pm »

Hi all, this may get a bit confusing, I'll do my best to be clear!

I'm using MC to manage a lot of video files.

I have used the 'Rename, Move, & Copy Files' tool to clean up some file names. The ACTUAL names of the files - as they exist in real life, in the directory - are now good, but MC's thumbnail views display the "Name" metatag, which didn't get cleaned.

I assume the answer lies in the 'Fill Properties From Filename' tool, but I cannot figure that out at all. It lacks the clear before-and-after preview of the 'Rename...' tool. Honestly I can't even tell what the window is supposed to be showing me. On the files I've tested with the 'Automatic' setting it shows nothing, yet appears to make something like 30 changes to each file, including changing the "Name" metatag of the file to the name of the folder it sits in, which is useless to me.

To be honest I also can't fathom the point of the "Filename", "Filename (name)", and "Filename (path)" metatags, if they aren't actually tethered to reality in any way (which seems to be the case).

So my questions are:

1. How to (in bulk) fill the "Name" metatag from the file's real, actual name?

2. How to (in bulk) fix or delete the seemingly fictional "Filename" tags?

Have you been here?

Filename is just that.  (path) also includes the path to the file.

When editing tags, you can use expressions.  Try entering this for Name:

=[Filename]

Experiment carefully.
