Merge the Playing Now Popup and MC's Taskbar Icon Popup?
« on: December 17, 2024, 05:53:06 pm »

As good as the new Playing Now Popup (PNP) is, I still find the Taskbar Icon Popup to be useful, because it is an easy fast swipe to open and reach its control buttons or temporarily glance at the full UI with a mouse hover.  Which raises the question - how about adding features of the Taskbar Icon Popup to the PNP:

(1) Add an option to open the PNP nearby to the Taskbar in response to hovering over MC's Taskbar Icon (instead of opening the Taskbar Icon Popup)?  Presumably this would only work when the MC UI is open or minimized (?).  Otherwise depend on <CTRL>+i shortcut.  I'm not sure if Windows allows such an action; if not, add PNP to Taskbar Icon's RMB context menu.

(2) Add a mouseover target area on the PNP which temporarily opens the full MC UI, like the Taskbar Icon Popup does now, and which sticks if the PNP is LMB clicked there.

(3) Improve upon the Taskbar Icon Popup by having the PNP mouseover open a temporary live copy of MC's UI.

(4) Allow two customizable copies of the PNP, one that only responds to a Taskbar icon mouseover, and one which behaves as currently with the <CTRL>+i shortcut (allow different skins and locations).  Alternatively, add an option to the PNP which enables it to also open in response to a Taskbar Icon mouseover (again, I'm not sure if Windows allows this type of action - if not, add PNP to Taskbar Icon's RMB context menu).

I think the taskbar popup is generated by the system.  Not sure we have control over that.

JRiver must have considerable control over the MC Taskbar icon's popup.  There's an impressive amount of functionality built into the mouseover popup when the MC window is minimized (on Windows - I don't know the behavior for other platforms).

Related: Does the PNP run as an additional background process?  If so, can there be an option to show it on the Windows Taskbar?  If yes, then maybe hovering over it on the Taskbar would open a miniature PNP image, and hovering over that mini-image would display a full size picture of the PNP (like any other running but minimized Windows application, though the picture may not be fully stateful).  Clicking on that mini-image might then trigger opening the PNP.  A second click would minimize it again, like other applications behave.  These could be fast mouse actions, supplementing the global keyboard shortcut <CTRL>+i.

Actually, what MC can do with the taskbar popup is limited. The buttons shown do come from the skin you're using, but other than that it doesn't change or more importantly add any new functions to the actual taskbar popup. You'd essentially be replicating the taskbar popup feature with the PNP, which I'm not really sure is possible because the taskbar popup and its associated features are a Windows system thing. I also don't think an app can override the taskbar popup and replace it with its own replicated feature, so they can't be merged.

Like I don't think your first request is possible, as I don't think anything can add/change the right click menu of the taskbar popup. Your second request sounds like a way to replicate the Aero Peek feature part of the taskbar popup and Windows itself with the PNP. The third is almost certainly not possible, since that's Aero Peek and is a Windows system feature that likely can't be changed/enhanced all and finally with the forth anything related to the taskbar popup likely isn't possible.

Finally, assuming anything related to customizing the taskbar popup it actually possible it should probably be avoided, as it's Windows only and won't apply to Linux or Mac. Any solution should be unique to the PNP itself and cross platform, no?

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.
