GoPro / Camera Imports & Tagging
« on: December 31, 2024, 02:18:36 am »

Hi team

Merry Christmas and hope everyone’s NY is looking like a good one! It’s time for another darichman home media tagging troubleshoot request. I will give the team a break on GeoTagging requests and have instead been troubleshooting imports of home videos from a few sources. I wondered if the following minor quibbles could be looked at and streamlined?

In most cases, I prefer to import photos/videos directly from device folder structure (eg DCIM folders for cameras) rather than using software tools (such as GoPro’s own app etc) to ensure original metadata - eg GoPro's software seems to fiddle with the date created. So I drag & drop from Windows into a temporary ‘Sorting’ playlist in MC and then use custom tagging views.

GoPro Hero 13
New Christmas present.
The device saves JPG image files and MP4 video files.

Device file structure is
  • Images DCIM\100GOPRO\GP010144.JPG
  • Videos DCIM\100GOPRO\GX010134.mp4
Overall works great.

Images:
•   MC pulls correct date from metadata.
•   Correctly populates [Camera] = GoPro HERO13 Black
•   Weirdly, the GoPro seems to populate ‘Title’ with a full file path that ends up in MC’s [Name] field. Eg [Name] = DCIM\100GOPRO\GP010144.JPG” I wonder if possible to simply use [Name] = GP010144 ?

Videos:
•   MC pulls correct date from metadata.
•   MC does an unnecessary case adjustment of the Filename into the [Name] field. Eg GX010134 becomes [Name]= Gx010134. Could this please be adjusted to just use the unmodified unique filename GX010134 ?

Panasonic Lumix FT5
An old camera, but a few annoying quibbles on import.
The device saves JPG image files and MTS video files (I think a variant of AVI)
Device file structure is
  • Images N:\DCIM\104_PANA\P1040953.jpg
  • Videos N:\PRIVATE\AVCHD\BDMV\STREAM.00014.MTS

Images:
•   MC pulls correct date & camera from metadata.
•   [Name] is appropriate from Filename
Videos:
•   MC does not populate any [Date] (see pic)
•   MC populates [Name] as ‘Avchd’. Could this please just be based off Filename (eg 00014 in the screens attached)?

I can send test files if desired. These are common brands, so while a fix would save me from correcting this with every single import, hopefully there might be a multiplier benefit for thousands of GoPro / Panasonic camera users too 😊
