In MJ8 I am using the following shemes:

directory: D:\[ARTIST]\{ALBUM}
filename: [ARTIST] {ALBUM} TRACK # - NAME

If I have ARTIST=bill
             ALBUM=magma
             NAME=blue

MJ8 produces the following file:
D:\[bill]\{magma}\[bill] {magma} 03 - blue.mp3

but MJ9 produces
D:\bill\{ALBUM}\{ALBUM} TRACK # - NAME.mp3

I understood that I have to use the following syntax:
directory: D:\[[ARTIST]]\{[ALBUM]}
filename: [[ARTIST]] {[ALBUM]} [TRACK #] - [NAME]

to get the same result as MJ8.

Why not, BUT, not as MJ8, MJ9 doesn't remember my shemes. It is tedious to retype them each time.

In fact, MJ8 doesn't remember my shemes but at least it remember my LAST scheme. MJ9 do not. Is it a bug or is it a new behaviour ?

MJ9 Requires [] to be around fields you use in renaming rules.

So [ARTIST] is 9's equivalent to 8's ARTIST.

I think if you work by that logic, you'll understand why thing are turning out the way they are.

Try this and you should get the desired results:

directory: D:\[[ARTIST]]\{[ALBUM]}
filename: [[ARTIST]] {[ALBUM]} [TRACK #] - [NAME]

As for why MJ isn't remembering your renaming schemes:

MJ8 : Design (flaw?)
MJ9 : Alpha build - not everything works right

It is exactely what I tried (see my first post) !
My true problem is that MJ9 doesn't remember my scheme. But of course, I was not complaining as I know it is an alpha version, I was just reporting a problem (which prevent me to continue to use MJ9).

Ah, stupid me. I misread that part of your post.

What happens if you try something like { [Album] } with spaces between the { and [?

There are other things not working right, that I've noticed. Like [IGNORE]

My (somewhat non-related, somewhat related) $.02:

Fill properties from filename works great.  Except that it never fills in the track's title.  As an example:


File:  Blindside - Silence - 02 - Pitiful.mp3
Settings:  [ARTIST] - [ALBUM] - [TRACK#] - [TITLE]
Results:  Album, track# and Artist are perfect, but the song's title reads "Blindside - Silence - 02 - Pitiful"

Mayhap I'm doing it wrong, but I think I'm doing it right.

I tried renaming my files like you listed, and it worked alright...

That works, with a different syntax as MJ8 (I have to enclose the keywords with []) but that works.

The problem is that MJ9 doesn't remember my last directory name scheme and my last filename scheme (MJ8 remember it).

Suggestion: it could be nice that MJ be able to save these schemes.

NB. The help says we have to enclose keywords with <> but in fact it is []

Here's another area where I think a little useability help is in order.

Like a button where you can have MJ automatically insert keywords.

Aye, I wrote that from here at work, and MJ9 is installed at home... was going off of memory (which isn't the best), so I can't be sure if it says [NAME] or [TITLE].  I'm nearly positive, however, that I used one of the pre-defined drop-down options... again, short-term memory loss is a pain, and I could be wrong on that one too.

However, sitting at my machine at home, I clearly remember lamenting that no matter what I tried, I had to manually enter the song titles.

Dang.  I have both problems!

When I use the tool "Rename file from properties" I get a "could not connect to a server" error.  Then MC thinks that the file has a new name, but it really doesn't and MC can no longer play the file....   ?

Rename file from properties works fine here on 9.0.103 ... and I have been heavily using it many times a week the last many builds with no problems.

This, along with ALL the other tools to rename, get properties from name etc should have options to allow us to add or delete naming formats from the list.

This is a standard feature in similar software packages.

I also think that it could be greatly improved upon by instead of making the user type in everything like the keywords, it should instead present them with a list of all the fields and let them choose how the filename is created from the list.
This would do several things:

• Stops you getting tons of bug reports when people dont type something in correctly
  
• Make it easier for beginners understand how to use.
  
• Save people having to try to remember the exact names of fields to type them in and would instead simply let them select the field name from a list.
  
  Again - this is pretty much the norm for all the other packages and so really makes MJ look like it's lagging behind and/or too technical for something thats a relatively basic task.
