MC 33 Crashing frequently
« on: January 03, 2025, 08:50:55 am »

Hi ,
My media library is about 20TB and I have been facing frequent crashes with MC 32-33. I have applied the recommendations regarding anti-virus settings as well as changing USB settings to avoid devices being put to sleep , reinstalled MC many times but the issue is not resolving . I tried most of the fixes on MC32 for a while and then finally upgraded to MC 33 hoping this would fix the crashes , unfortunately the crashes have kept re-occuring. I have enabled logs and was tracking the entries when the crash happens , mostly these 3:
1. The database indexing? Ususally with these entries : Database: CSearchFilesHelper::GetResults: Search:
2. Unknown exceptions:

I was not able to attach the crash dump to this post. Its available here : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1re8tmTdUYKmd6--wxANgyCg59Lcgbcfp/view?usp=sharing
Any help or guidance is truly appreciated as this has been bugging me for a while.

It might be helpful to the experts if you provide more information about the system config that you're using. Things like which version of Windows you're using, whether the media files themselves are on external USB drives, on a NAS, connected wirelessly/through DLNA, etc.

If you've tried two versions of Media centre, please make sure that you tamed Windows Defender for both versions based on https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114101.0.html

Please seebelow for more informations:
Windows 10 , Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz   2.59 GHz , 16 GB RAM
AVP used is TrendMicro (I have applied the setting for exclusions based off the WIndows Defencer Post)
The Music video files are stored across external HDD (all connected via USB to the PC) ( 8TB * 3, 4TB *1 , 5TB *1 , 1TB * 1) (All HDD are Western Digital and the diagnostics are good on each ).

The music files are 70% FLAC , some DSD/ISOs , mp3/wav/m4a
Video files are mostly MKV and extracted BDV/DVD.

Since I have an extensive library I do use the MC webservice APIs to update metadata / playlists (been doing that for a few years).

Hope this helps.

Based on the fact that you mention 6 USB HDDs, I'm wondering if you're using a USB hub between the pc and the drives as they can be/become flaky. Would it be feasible to at least temporarily uninstall TrendMicro to see if that changes anything?

Your pc is also quite old based on the specs so while it is not directly related, if you're not planning to switch to Linux before Win 10 support ends on Oct 14, 2025, are you planning the replacement of the pc?

USB isn't exactly the fastest either, especially dealing with multiple external hard drives equaling 20TB in size. There's bound to be some bottlenecks in the chain somewhere and typically I would generally recommend not using that many external USB hard drives because it's just asking for weird issues, e.g. issues with USB controllers and things like that. I would highly recommend getting a single large (external if absolutely necessary) hard drive and consolidate everything for simplicity's sake. Even better would be getting and setting up a NAS that would be a major improvement over using multiple external hard drives over USB. Otherwise it's probably going to be hard to track down any specific crashes unless it's caused by bad files during the import (or auto-import) process. That's something you can try doing if you have auto-import enabled, disabling it and see if it stops crashing.

As for Trend Micro, no comment other than saying in my experience I'm not a fan of it at all and would rather use Windows Defender over it any day of the week.

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

Yes , I am actually planning to replace the PC with a Mac Mini M4 ,but wanted to resolve these issues before making a switch as I would probably only use the mac mini as an exclusive HTPC.
I will also explore the option of testing after uninstalling Trend Micro,
Thanks

Yes , I am looking at building a proper NAS in the future . If it helps I have been using JRiver for more than a decade and I started noticing these crashes about 2-3 years ago . The Hardrives probably grew at an average of 2TB /year in thelast 4 years.
If there is any indication of a possible cause in the dump then please do let me know.
In the meanwhile I will try exploring all the options that have been mentioned in the thread.

Thanks.

Remove the antivirus. Use Windows Defender only. Configure it.
