Star ratings non-functional - resolved
« on: January 07, 2025, 12:31:33 pm »

I can't get any star rating functionality to work within MC33 (any version) on Mac Sequoia 15.2

Clicking on a star rating doesn't "stick", prior star ratings are completely absent in MC, and although I can apply stars in JRemote, these ratings are only visible and usable directly within JRemote with none of these star ratings appearing in MC33.

I think this has been a problem for my system for some time, as it pre-dates MC33 and I've made only limited use of star ratings, but am now at the point where I'd like to use them more fully.

I've dug into YABB in detail, and have looked through all MC options and settings to try to fix, but without success.

Any thoughts or suggestions???

Works fine for me with a local library.
Are you on a Media Center client MC?
If so you need to be authenticate R/W for it to sync back changed to the server.

Yup, doesn’t work for either local or remote libraries.

I’ve got media server/centre running on a Mac Studio and can’t set ratings on it when on that system using its local library, or from a MacBook connected to that library through the usual remote library access.

Doesn’t work on an alternative local library on the MacBook either.

No problem with tagging files from either system either using local or remote libraries, so it’s  strange that star ratings won’t work at all.

What skin are you using?

Interesting question - Black on Black.

Changing to Blue Steel seems to resolve the problem - ratings now appear to work and also for some other skins.  Some remain non-functional on ratings.

Any chance Black on Black can be corrected to, well, correct, this?

Ok, so now that I can see star ratings in other skins, it looks as though they are present in the skins where they don't appear to work - it's just that the colour selected for the stars is so close to the background, and so low in resulting contrast, that they're virtually impossible to see.

In the case of Black on Black, the stars are such a dark-grey tone that they're almost invisible.

Can these be lightened to the same colour as the text used for the skin?

David - Check the contrast on your monitor because the Black on Black Skin does not suffer from a lack of contrast, I can quite easily see what the rating for an individual track in the Playing Now List is when I'm standing about 8' away from the screen.

If you want individual parts of a skin, like the rating stars, changed you have to do it yourself or ask a willing active skin creator to do it for you.

Thx for your reply.

My monitor contrast is fine (the Adobe-RGB gamut monitors on my main system are precisely calibrated for photo editing, and are very accurate), so I think it's just a matter that the start colour is too low in contrast natively within the skin.

Title on the opening post updated to "resolved".
