huge thumbnails file
« on: Yesterday at 11:57:33 am »

Dear all, I have just upgraded to MC 33. In adding my music files to its library, the program has created a huge file for thumbnails: 21 GB. It's taking up all the remaining free space on my hard drive. (Mac mini 2018, macos sequoia). Please advise.

How large is your library? That size is normal for about half a million tracks. If that's not the case then you can try rebuilding the thumbnails (select files -> right click -> cover art -> rebuild thumbnails).

You can also close MC and just delete the "thumbnails (large).jmd" file, then do the rebuild.

The automatic backups may also be filling up your disk as MC has an option to include thumbnails in the backups. Check Options -> Library&Folders -> Thumbnails in library backups.

There is also a known issue with MacOS regarding using too much disk space for a relatively small file. You can check on the file properties both the "file size" and the "size on disk", which are usually different. Here's the discussion about that:

A possible fix is:
- close MC
- make a copy of the file to an USB drive/stick
- delete the original large file
- copy the file back

thanks for this. I have about 2tb of music on my external hard drive.

I took the steps you suggested, and read the earlier posts you referred me to. There was indeed a weird difference between the size of the "thumbnails (large)" file and the amount of space it was taking up.

but I have been able to reclaim the space on the mac hd, so thanks
