Spotify-Oh MY
« on: February 01, 2025, 10:36:10 pm »

I've been reading Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist by Liz Pelly which was brought to my attention by Ann Powers as part of an NPR email Newsletter.  Perhaps JRiver folks have read it as your feet are planted in the "Streaming water River".  When I read Spotify is all about playlists, it piqued my interest.

Can't say it's a great read.  Seems like it was stretched a bit to be sold as a book.  Nonetheless it is quite revelatory.  Books topics include "royalty rates", "AI generated songs" or "data collection". The company is driven by playlists, which evolves from human to machine curation.  You see how the books' subject matter just begs for spirited discussion? Then throw in the supreme rule "there is nothing more important than profit" it becomes pretty obvious and very topical. Kazuo Ishiguro it is not, but I think some of you geeks out there might have interest. My thoughts were aplenty reading it.
