This is probably a daft question, but when is this used. What is it for. Does it mean you can now use jriver to decode atmos?

It is used by/for users that have a 7.1.4 or greater speaker setup who want MC to play their tracks to every speaker in their setup.  If you do have that kind of setup it may allow you to play Atmos tracks. But to get the True Atmos Effect you would need a Speaker Configuration that has an OnBoard Dolby Atmos DAC/Interface/Decoder.

Dolby Reference Player can be used to decode the atmos to WAV format.  That's what most, if not all, are doing for Atmos playback.

It has been greatly simplified since this initial overview:

Thank you both  :) I'm running a 7.1 system at the mo.

Oh that's Interesting. So you make a one of purchase for the Dolby media encoder to get the Dolby reference player. Sounds good.

I am running a Lynx AES16e to my processor. It sounds similar to this https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=137314.0

So how do you configure the Dolby media encoder to work with JRiver.?
