Multichannel playback issues
konoyaro:
I recently upgraded my Mac mini from an old intel version to a Mac mini M4.
On upgrade, I transferred the user settings but noticed on playback of multichannel files that imaging / channel placement was wrong.
I initially noticed this on some 5.1 encoded Flac files in the new setup that had play back fine previously.
I then tried the same files in VLC and playback seemed normal there.
Going back to MC, I tried Tools > Audio Calibration > 5.1 and here I find that Center and Subwoofer are silent.
What am I missing?
Here's my current setup:
Mac mini macOS 15.3.1 > Media Center 32.0.8 > HDMI connected to Onkyo PR-SC5507
In MC:
Options > Audio Device is set to (Default) [Core Audio]
DSP Studio > Output Encoding = None, Channels = 5.1
Also of note, my new setup disallows .dsf playback whereas it was possible previously but I guess that's worthy of a separate thread

Unfortunately I haven't solved either issue.
Further troubleshooting:
I wondered if the processor might be failing so I pulled out some SACDs and played them with my Oppo 103.
I was able to confirm that the processor was decoding the DSD stream from the Oppo in both stereo and multichannel.
So next thought was maybe it was an issue with the HDMI port being used by the Mac Mini so I switched to a different HDMI port - MCh and .dsf issues still present.
Next was to try different host hardware. I had a MacBook Pro 14,3 / Intel running macOS 13.7.4 + HDMI display adaptor to try but still the same problem.
Running out of ideas unfortunately.
Awesome Donkey:
You can't output DSD from HDMI from any sort of computer (PC, Mac, etc.). To play it back over HDMI you'd have to set it to be convert DSD to PCM. In order to play it back as DSD you'd have to connect it via USB or if the Oppo supports it over DLNA (via DoPE).
