Any way to add a Compressor or other DSP to the output?
« on: March 10, 2025, 08:42:00 am »

Is there any way for the playback output to be processed through a compressor or other virtual processor for my music playback?

I want to use JRiver as my playback front end application and would like to pass the output through a compressor application that then sends the final output to the DAC.

Or would it be done the other way round, that is the digital file is processed through the compressor and then via JRiver to send it to the DAC.

Hope that this makes sense.  Let me know if you want me to clarify further.

Many thanks

BTW, by Compressor I do NOT mean something that compresses the audio like MP3 or changes the files from lossless to lossy.

I mean an audio compressor like the ones found in recording studios that prevent clipping of the audio signal.

Hope that helps to clarify.

There's a limiter function in dsp studio

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Parametric_Equalizer#Adaptive_Limiter

Otherwise you can find some vst and use that instead

If it's just to avoid clipping then there's already one built in (but better to use analyse audio and let it adjust level to avoid need for it at all)

I mean something like these here.

https://www.uaudio.com/uad-plugins/compressors-limiters.html?srsltid=AfmBOor6pfzQcDRtQN22Sv7kVbegUaV4iXwrURmni9vemscMNkCH9xAL

There is a whole host of them here and they are more for music production but I would like to use them with JRiver for audio playback.

I have some files that are clipping and the Clip protection in Jrive does not seem to solve the issue.

thanks for the quick reply Matt,  I take another look at the DSP to see if that can solve the issue.

If you run audio analysis then use some appropriate combination of volume leveling and adaptive volume with internal volume then it should account for it, doesn't it work for you?
