Distorted sound with Topping D50 III dac
« on: March 07, 2025, 12:10:30 pm »

Hello,
I recently purchased the Topping D50 III dac via Amazon, hoping to improve my JRiver hifi audio experience. Unfortunately, the result has not been good because I get a distorted sound (with noises like D-A conversion errors that I didn't have with my old DAC) with JRiver Media Center 31… Even though I’ve configured it according to the Topping Manuals recommendations.  Furthermore, this situation doesn’t occur with other Windows applications such as Youtube.

In fact, to achieve the full capacity of the DAC on the USB IN connection, the device must be configured as: "USB protocol version in UAC2.0". However, the result is a distorted sound on JRiver. To avoid this distortion, I must change the DAC configuration to UAC1.0. But this causes the inconvenience that the maximum resolution that the USB operates with, is 96 kHz 32 bits... Preventing me from taking advantage of the DAC full potential (up to 768 kHz).

My settings and equipment are:

 1) OS and dac Topping D50 III drivers
- OS: Windows 11 24H2 build 26100.3323
- Topping Driver: Version 5.72.0 (current version)

2) JRiver Media Center 31 settings:
- Audio Device: Topping USB Audio Device (ASIO)
- Bitstreaming: Yes (DSD) -> DSD  (Recommended by Toppingaudio)

3) PC Hardware:
- Intel NUC NUC11TNHi5
- 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1135G7 @ 2.40GHz Processor
- 16 Gb RAM.

What could be the cause of the sound distortion problem on the JRiver, when configuring the dac with USB protocol version in UAC2.0?
Could it be that my MC31 version is already too old?

I would really appreciate your kind opinion and help.
Thanks so much and best regards,

Try replacing the USB Cable with one that is UAC2 certified/compatible also make sure the cable between the Topping and the PC is plugged into the PC and not a dock or an extension cable.

Thanks for your recommendation and response.
I'm using the cables included with the Topping dac... and are plugged directly to the PC.
But, I've recently been able to improve the situation by replacing the cable USB-C (from the dac) to USB-A (plugged to PC USB 3.0) with the other cable USB-C to USB-C, plugged to the PC's Thunderbolt 4 input, which supports higher data transmission speeds than USB-A 3.0.
However, I still hear noises of data conversion failures.
Best regards,

I was suffering with noisy USB on an Intel NUC, I bought a USB isolator, solved it for me.
