Author Topic: DSD256 (Base Rate 48 kHz) @ 12.3 MHz is shown as DoP Sample Rate of 705.6 kHz  (Read 496 times)

I have enabled 4DSD native in JRiver Media Center, so all my *.wav music files at 44.1 kHz sample base rates are upsampled to 11.3 MHz. The display of my RME ADI-2 Pro DAC, using its own ASIO driver, shows the corresponding DoP sample Rate of 705.6 kHz. So far so good.

However when I play a *.wav music file at 48 kHz base sample base rate, the upsampled DSD sample rate should read 12.3 MHz with a corresponding DoP sample rate of 768 kHz. But shown is a DoP sample rate of 705.6 kHz.

The reported rates are correct. There is no DSD rate that is an integer multiple of 48 Khz.

DSD is always a multiple of 2.822 Mhz - so 2.8, 5.6, 11.2 MHz for 1x, 2x and 4x. The corresponding DoP rates are 176, 352 and 705. Any 48 KHz or mulitples of that files are converted to those DSD rates.

It appears, that original DSD albums in *.dsf or *.dff format are correctly processed in JRiver Media Center, as an example:

DSD256    Sample Rate: 256 x 44.1 = 11.3 MHz   RME ADI-2 Pro Display: 16 x 44.1 = 705.6 kHz
DSD256    Sample Rate: 256 x 48.0 = 12.3 MHz   RME ADI-2 Pro Display: 16 x 48.0 =768.0 kHz

However, the oversampler to DSD engine in JRiver Media Center apparently only processes to e.g.

DSD256    Sample Rate: 256 x 44.1 = 11.3 MHz   RME ADI-2 Pro Display: 16 x 44.1 = 705.6 kHz

Please explain the 12.3 Mhz sample rate.  Where did you find a 12.3 MHz dsf or dff file? I have not seen DSD files or converters that use 12.3 Mhz.

These are 48 Khz PCM files that Archimago believes were upsampled to DSD format. That does not say they were upsampled to an integer multiple of 48 Khz. SACDs are 2.822 MHz. As far as I know there are no SACDs that are an integer multiple of 48KHz. The listed SACDs are almost certainly 2.822 MHz.  Similarly, upsampling a 48 KHz file in MC produces a DSD sampling rate that is a multiple of 44.1 KHz, not 48 KHz.

If you have a DSD file that is at a sample frequency that is a multiple of 48 KHz, I would like to see it.

RME manual says:
" In DSD mode the DSP performs an additional DSD to PCM conversion, to
be able to show the audio signal on the level meters and for the Analyzer – another unique feature
of the ADI-2 series."

Interesting enough, how RME arrives at 768 kHz on a display from 4DSD clock of roughly 11.3
DSD256    Sample Rate: 256 x 48.0 = 12.3 MHz   RME ADI-2 Pro Display: 16 x 48.0 =768.0 kHz

Would be nice to hear from RME.

Some DACs/players convert DSD to PCM at a multiple of 48 Khz. They do that because not all DACs can play 88, 176, 352 or 705 KHz. That might be what is happening in the RME conversion. Once it is in PCM it is easy to convert it to any PCM sample rate.
