Why Can’t We Hear Movie Dialogue Anymore?

Sadly, everything this guy says is so true.

When i finish building my system I will want to use JRiver for playing my DVD and BD movies. Most movies in my collection are quite old and I do enjoy rewatching them, so this problem doesn't happen too often. But when I buy or borrow newer movies from public libraries I'm forever having to ride the volume control.

I don't know if JRiver developers are working on this or have decided that there's no kind of fix to address this problem that won't further compromise audio quality. But I wanted to make sure they know about how serious is this matter of "layered soundscape aesthetics"
and actors vocal stylizing vs. dialogue clarity.

My wife and I, along with several friends agree that it is harder to hear/distinguish dialogue in tv/streaming shows and movies.  What we've done recently in our 5.1 home theater that has helped us is increasing the centre channel by 3-6 dB then enabling Adaptive Volume in the Audio - DSP menus and choosing night mode. We then can reduce the overall volume while still hearing the dialogue. If we're going to listen to music or watch older movies without the dialogue issue, we just disable the Adaptive volume.

The center channel db boost option in output format is really the solution to this problem IMO.  Adding 3 to 6 db is usually enough to make dialog perfectly intelligible with modern films IME.

This center channel boost is enough for me too but my wife's hearing is not as good as mine (my vision is worse than hers) so she finds the Night mode with the center channel boost works best for her.
