Media type Rules for Zones?
« on: April 07, 2025, 02:43:39 pm »

Hi

Any chance one can have some type of Media type Rules for Zones?
I want to use MC for music, images and videos ... however the frustrating hassle I keep coming across is, while I often listen to music in the background while I work, I then browse the images while listen to music, or watch a video and then want to continue with the music ... BUT too often the images or videos that I watched land up replacing the list of musoc that I was listening to. So I have to start the music playlist over and over again.

Is there no way to completely separate the 3 media types ... I was thinking maybe possible to have a zone specifically for Music, that would ONLY play music, and maybe a Zone for ONLY images, and again a Zone for ONLY videos, ... is there no setting or rules one can make so that for instance a "Music Zone" would ONLY play music/audio files and NOT play any other type of files?

I have created separate Zones for Music, Images and Videos ... but often I will forget to change the zone when I want to change playing a different media type.

And besides Zones ... if there's any other Simple way that I can separate these media files where they don't interfere with where I left off with the previous play media files ... I'd love to know.

TIA

I actually do exactly what you are talking about and it works great.  All you have to do is set up a rule using zone switch to force the slideshow to play in a dedicated zone. For reference see:
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Zones#ZoneSwitch, and
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,76605.50.html)

While MC can run a slideshow without need of a separate zone, as you discovered, you cannot control them independently.  In the picture below I have a zone called Slideshow that MC automatically uses anytime I launch a slideshow, allowing me to control it independently of the music.

That said, if you have never used zoneswitch before, fair warning: it can be a bit tedious and frustrating to get things working correctly. Maybe people smarter than me have no issues, but I always struggle when I want to change or update the switch rules. Just bear in mind that rules are evaluated in order and you have to make sure your rules are sequenced such that everything ends up playing in the desired zone. That may seem obvious, but you will understand better what I'm talking about when you try and implement it yourself.

Note that my rules are (mostly) in reverse order of the zones themselves (this is important). Of course if you only use two zones, that will make things much simpler to set up.

Okay ... i got Images to play only in Image Zone, Music to only play in Music Zone, Video only to play in Video zone ... But IF I want Listen to and have music to continue playing while looking at Images in Image Zone ... any idea how, and if that's possible, are 2 zones able to be active at same time, would I be able to listen to music in the music zone, While actively being in the Image Zone?

It is absolutely possible, and the only way in which you can both play and control them independently/simultaneously.  You just can't have both zones active in the same tab, or I should say, it is not possible to have two zones simultaneously active in a single tab.

Look at the picture in my initial reply and see the multiple tabs across the top of the content area? The first tab with the headphone icon is, unsurprisingly, my headphone zone for listening to music.  The tab right next to it is my Slideshow zone. You just need to create additional tabs for each zone you want to use.  MC can play them all simultaneously and control them independently.

If you are unfamiliar with using/creating multiple tabs, take a look at the post below where I just recently helped somebody else with exactly that (creating multiple tabs that is).

Thanks again ... will look into this, much appreciated.

Okay, I just tried it ... created individual tabs and locked each ... But, still ... If I have music playing in the music zone in one tab, then I got to the Image tab and play/view images in the images tab & zone, then the music stops again ... am I doing something wrong?
