dsd over dlna -- help troubleshoot the issue
« on: April 10, 2025, 10:15:59 pm »

Hi all,

I have a weird issue popping up once in a while, can't find the source.

Issue: somewhere in the medianetwork, some gremlin is _intermittently_ attempting to convert my MCh (or 2Ch... doesn't matter) dsf to PCM with resulting hiss over music, or a "unable to play the format" message. Sequential reboots sometimes help, sometimes half-help.

Setup: JRiver MediaCenter (v.32) set up as Media Library Server on a virtual Linux box;
same thing is setup as MediaRenderer, loaded library from the Library Server, sitting on a win10 pro quazi-HTPC connected to an external DAC (Octo8Pro) via ASIO/USB
same thing is setup as MediaController, same library fromLibrary Server,  on a random win11 home laptop.

DLNA server options on the Library server "specified format if necessary" (I tried "original" as well, no difference)

dsf bitstreaming is "on" on the Renderer; I had output format "if necessary" turned on and off -- no difference.

occasionally it just magically starts working; often I had to get up, go to the HTPC, and start the playback from there -- it usually works (unless I forget to shut off Roon Bridge running there).

Please point me in the right direction with troubleshooting.

Thanks!

srsly... I did not expect my issue was that niche...  :)

I removed all existing DLNA servers, and only left one on each machine, "Original format";
I turned off all firewalls on all machines;
the machine where all the files live is a "server"
the machine connected to USB DAC is a "renderer"
the machine I'm trying to control the playback from is a "controller"

Everything works just fine with all file formats EXCEPT DSD! The only way to play DSDs is using JRiver interface on the "renderer", either physically or via RDP... which is less than elegant.

Help!

I think I preliminarily got it working... more or less.

the setup is all the same, but I unloaded the server library from the renderer... so it kinda sits there like any other DLNA renderer. This config survived the server reboot.

Now, next question: I'd like to automate the playback procedure in a sense that dsd files should play "as is", and all the rest would have some DSP stuff applied. I'm guessing Zone Switch should do this, with the rule based on "file type" -- but where exactly should this be turned on/set up? Server? Renderer? Controller?
