Media Center Encountered Errors While Tagging
« on: April 12, 2025, 09:28:20 am »

Well, I have to say, MC is a truly well-designed, practical, and efficient application, BUT this 'Media Center encountered errors while tagging' message is still extremely irritating (and my only beef with the whole package). Apologies for the fact that I have already raised this issue once before, but I have tried everything suggested, and scoured the Forum for suggestions or solutions. What makes it annoying is the fact that it does not occur every time. Some albums yes, some no. Plus, it you are doing some editing/updating to multiple files, this annoying message is copied on to the clipboard (why though?), interfering with any copy/pasting you might be doing at the time. Has anyone actually solved this?

That's a filesystem issue, usually caused by unmounted external drives, NAS shares, or files that have been moved outside of MC.

OK...I have mounted external drives where all my music files are stored, I don't have NAS, and none of the files have been moved outside of MC, unless deleted.

If files are deleted outside of MC and MC tries to apply tags to those files, you'll receive the error. You can manually trigger an Auto Import to remove externally deleted files if those directories are monitored.

Also keep an eye on your mounted external drives to make sure that they aren't dropping offline. I've had external USB enclosures that occasionally power cycle that have caused similar issues.

Not sure I understand. I am editing tags (country, genre etc.) to new albums just added to MC, and that's when I get the message for some of these albums, but not all. I don't see the connection to deleted files, which have been sent to recycling thus effectively removed from any watched folders.

Are these files/directories watched by Auto-Import?

Yes, the folders where I keep my music files are watched by MC

I've had serious issues in the past with using usb external drives and long ago gave up storing music on them for use by MC (could have just been my setup).  Dropping offline or hiccups could be a problem as mentioned above.  I've had subtly bad USB docks give me nightmare issues.  Have no idea whether any of that is the problem in your situation.  Doesn't seem to likely, but.....

I could see that possibility if the message showed up randomly. In my case, it shows up consistently, but only for certain albums...

Suggestion: based on your description, that it only happens for certain albums some of the time, I am wondering if you know what the results of the tagging were.   What failed, did it all tagging fail or what.   Knowing what, if anything failed, might help get some comments from people if you could say whether there was actually a problem and what it was.   As another note, I may not be remembering accurately, but I believe I occasionally may get this message (rarely) and don't think I have done anything outside of MC to cause it, BUT I have never actually identified a failure in tagging, just the message (if I am remembering correctly).  That doesn't mean there wasn't some kind of failure, just that I have never been able to find or identify one.  I have never said anything on the forum because I have never identified an actual problem.

- Does tagging work later on for the same files?
- Did you check file/folder write permissions?
- What type of files/albums, flac/mp3/mka? Are there .cue or .mp3u files in the folder? Some file types don't support tagging, and .cue files may lead to import issues.
- How are you adding the files to the folder - self-ripped, download from internet, torrent? Maybe the files are still open in another app, like the ripping tool (if not MC) or a torrent client.
- Antivirus can also hold the file for some time after download/ripping - better exclude the Media folder just in case.

The tagging message pops up, as mentioned (consistently for certain albums), but the tagging still occurs. So, why am I even bothered, you might say. Well, any tagging I do in Mc automatically carries over to another program, but NOT if I get the 'Media Center Encountered Erros' message.

No, as mentioned in my previous response, the tagging error message comes up (the tagging works). To answer your question, the message always comes up for that file later on even after restarting, waiting several days etc.
By 'file/folder' write permissions, maybe you mean Windows 'accepts long filenames'?
Files are basically all FLAC. Any cue. files are converted to FLAC by MC, and the problem is in any case not exclusive to them.
Files are from torrent client.

If a file is currently uploading/seeding in your torrent client, you'll get a tagging error as MC will not be able to write to the file. You'll still see the tags within MC, but they are not written to the file itself (which means your other app won't see them).

You can enable logging in MC before reproducing the error to find out a bit more.

I enabled logging in MC, but nothing has changed. I can see though that the tags are not being written to the file

Logging is just to see what went wrong. Please find the log and share it here.

If you right-click on a file that failed tagging and select "Library->Update tags from library", do you get the same error?
If so, you can try doing the same with your torrent client closed. Also check the problematic file - is it marked Read-only?

It's also possible that the file's you're downloading are damaged.
