on the HDR tab, "Use the display's HDR capability for HDR videos (if available)"

it's described inhttps://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/JRVR_-_JRiver_Video_Renderer/Configuration as only relevant to HDR output but does it have any impact or side effect if the output is SDR? if so, what exactly?

Will also depend on the advanced setting: "Output SDR as HDR"

The setting controls if HDR is output as HDR, if its turned off only SDR is ever output, eg. tonemapping is engaged. Of course if the display doesn't support HDR in the first place, that point is irrelevant anyway, as we require the display to be in HDR mode to output HDR.

If your screen is in HDR mode and that setting is off, JRVR will still output SDR to the OS, and its up to the OS/GPU to convert it to a HDR signal.

ok so it has no impact and no side effects if tone mapping to SDR?

asking because it came up over in this thread (https://www.avsforum.com/threads/jriver-tonemapping-madvr-alternative.3222170/page-24?post_id=63947659#post-63947659) as a setting that influences the output for tonemapped SDR

All it controls is if JRVR is allowed to output HDR if the display allows it. If the display does not support HDR (or HDR is disabled in Windows), it does nothing. Of course if HDR is in fact enabled, then it'll disable tonemapping and do HDR output instead.
