I have a licensed JRiver MC user, and I am very happy with my setup on Mac, and am now moving to a headless Docker setup. The one standout feature for me is the search, which is able to cut through the dense classical music metadata of my library and find virtually everything I am needing very quickly. Frankly no other competing product can come close to this.
I am now increasingly using JRemote on iPad and iPhone, to play back content from the Docker MC instance locally, to send to a connected DAC and headphones. The connection and audio part all work fine. What I would need in terms of improvement is to have more metadata displayed, which is required for classical music. JRemote does not appear to be able to separate any of a large multi disc album into its constituent discs, via the DiscNumber tag, or order the same using the Grouping or Work tags, both of which are populated. For example, I have the Complete Recordings of Conductor ABC as a single album grouping dozens of CDs. Each of these CDs is specified through a Grouping or Work tag. In MC, I use a panes view to have the Grouping tag display, so I can quickly and easily choose a specific CD. This is not possible under JRemote, which displays all individual tracks together, and therefore sometimes present a very long list which is difficult to scroll.
One request is therefore to be able to display one of these tags, and divide a large multi-album work this way.
The other has to do with the way search is performed and displayed. The excellent fuzzy search of the desktop version is maintained, but the album results simply point again to the entire album. Going back to the example above, suppose I search ABC (Conductor's name) and Beethoven. The search results finds the correct album, but then takes me to the long list, without going straight to the Beethoven works, as MC on the desktop does. The individual tracks which are found through these search are often out of order, and are of little use anyways in a classic context, where we would queue up an entire album. Would it be possible at least to have another element in the pop-up menu which appears when long-pressing, which gives an option to go to the relevant part of the relevant album? That would enable queuing up the needed tracks properly, albeit via a few steps.
There are also some cosmetic infelicities in the latest version, which I will raise once these points have been addressed.
Apologies for the length of this post - JRemote is a wonderful product, which I hope will be improved further this way.
Many thanks for your attention to these issues!
