Library seems to be multiplying itself
« on: Yesterday at 05:47:46 am »

Hi - brand new to JRiver and to this forum. Hoping this isn't the stupidest question(issue ever....

Setting up a library of 90,000-ish files - putting albums and tracks into lists that I've set up. Here's the weirdness, encountered only this morning - been using JRiver for 2 days without this happening:
11:10

When I'm in Files mode, I see 91,000 + files. All very well. But when I go to Player mode (I'm working in Player mode to put tracks into category lists, because the somewhat helpful sequential track number appears only in this mode, so far as i know) - boom goes the total, up to el stratosphere-o. And yup, file searches in Player mode reveal 4 copies of everything. Searches in File mode show only one. Have I reimported the whole library somehow? It would seem so, but if so, how??

Grateful for any help! - Stork

If by "Playing Mode" you mean Playing Now > Player, then that's just the playing queue, ie, the playback sequence list (hence the Seq column). Sounds like you added all your files to the queue multiple times. You can clear that queue without losing any data (except the queue itself).

To manage categories/genres/tags/playlists/etc, you should use the views under Audio/Files or Playlists. You can add the Track# column there if it's missing. "Seq" only makes sense in Playlists, and is distinct from Track# and Disc#.

Thanks, Zybex. I have returned to using the Files view. I can't seem to find how to add the Track # to a list. I've seen it before but can't get back to where you can edit columns in Files view. That would be helpful.

Not sure, it could be that when I was trying to sort out another, still-unsolved problem - that of getting JRiver to recognize the retagging I had done (which I did outside of JRiver, using dbPoweramp), To do so, I first tried Configure Auto Import, as I noticed that the two big folders I had set up the library initially with were not in the list of folders that JRiver could see - probably because I had used the option "Import a Single Folder" and imported my two folders that way, rather than use the Configure Auto Import option initially. Then, I used the Run Auto Import Now option a few times, trying to get my tag changes recognized in JRiver (in vain, alas). Maybe that's where the over-population problem came from(?)

Now if I could just get those track numbers into the Files view, I can ignore the Player view, I guess. Still mulling over the tag-update problem.

Thanks very much again for your reply!

Right-click on one of the existing column headers to show a list of other columns to add to the view.

Auto-Import doesn't add duplicate files - that's just your queue, as I said above.

Select one of the files and check all existing tags on the Tag editor panel (lower left). At the bottom of that list there's also the 'Tag Dump' which shows all tags in the file itself. If your previous tags are there, then they can be imported. For some non-standard tags you may need to first create Fields in MC with the same name as the missing tag.

When you have done everything Zybex suggested open files view, select all the files/tracks in the library and then select Update Library (From Tags) Option.

Thanks Zybex and English Tiger. I'm a bit lost when looking at the tags pane in MC. I'll watch a tutorial and trs to find out how it works. I've been using dbPoweramp up to now, and would like to continue. Looking at the tags, I see the old tag info that I corrected in dbP, hoping to see it appear in MC. In other words - no change. I'm currently updating the files, per Tiger's instructions. omg, didn't know you have to highlight the files before applying the update command (duh!) It's scanning all 91K files right now, so it'll be a little bit...guess i'll have to selectively highlight files to be updated in future so that it doesn't scan the whole library, yes?

You can just set up the auto-import for your media folders, then run auto-import to scan them - MC will detect updated files (by their timestamps) and reload their tags automatically. Much faster than forcing the Update Library on all files.

Thanks, zybex. Did the Files view scan. Took about 3-4 hours. Didn't fix the tags. btw, yes, I checked the box in Options/General/Update tags when file info changes.

How do I configure the auto-import?

You need to find the Tag Dump section I mentioned above to confirm the tags you're looking for are there or not.

Which tags exactly are missing, what are the tag names in dbPowerAmp?
Maybe some screenshots would help.

Apologies! I had two folders with the files in question and fixed tags for the wrong (backup) folder,- just fixed the tags in the correct folder - the one MC was looking at. And voila! The tag changes are immediately visible in MC. Oy, I feel a bit schmucky. But thanks, guys! Learned a lot and really have a handle on at least these two issues now. Much apreesh!
