View > Skins > Skin Effects > Add Color is Unresponsive
« on: Yesterday at 11:14:17 am »

Apologies if this is already a known issue. Was present in v33 as well. On Mac the Add Color and subsequent "Change Color" button / color picker is totally unresponsive. If you select "Add color" from the drop-down menu the default seems to be a pinkish hue but zero ability to adjust it. Clicking "Change Color" button gets zero response. The brightness and contrast sliders above the color picker DO work. I'm specifically using Modern Cards: Dark, however I tried this on 5 different skins (older and newer) and got the same result. See screenshot.

  • Select View > Skin > Skin Effects
  • Below the Brightness and Contrast Sliders select "Add Color" from the Effects drop-down menu
  • Click the Change Color button.

Is there an XML file somewhere that sets the initial color hue? I could at least go adjust that value manually so the default color is what I prefer.

For every skin available for use in MC there is a folder that contains the main.xml file and up to over 100 images; to change just the background color in a skin takes a lot of time and patience because some areas of the skin are built using images to provide the background whilst other use Colors instructions.

So I would not recommend anyone who has no experience of creating/modifying  an MC skin making changes to any MC Standard View Skin until the Guide to Standard View Skinning is Published; mainly because they will encounter the problem that guide hopefully address, a lack of detailed, up to-date information on how to do it.

Add Color works for me under Windows. The Change Color button shows a standard color picker dialog.

Thanks @EnglishTiger. I don't believe this has anything to do w/ the skins specifically. The "Change Color" button is totally unresponsive. And the pink hue it defaults to when the "Add color" is selected is not a color used by any of the skins themselves. It's the same default color regardless of the skin used.

I'm pretty familiar w/ XML so that doesn't bother me. I reviewed all the color hex codes used in Modern Cards: Dark Main.xml file in a code editor and none of them are the pink/salmon color that MC defaults to. I suspect this problem is upstream of that. "MC Skinning Engine Defaults" might be where the issue lies, perhaps the inability to conjure the Mac's OS native color picker, or the lack of an app based color picker provided by JRiver.

It's the misbehaving "Change Color" routines that is causing the pink hue, probably because that is the 1st color in the color palette that it should have given you access to
