Moving Files From One Hard Drive to another
« on: May 04, 2025, 05:35:34 pm »

I am currently using MC 34 and purchasing a larger External Hard Drive for storage and am wondering if there is a way to transfer the files through MC34
My issue is I have managed to save file in many different roots on my old hard drive and my goal is to have them in one root onto a new hard drive using MC34

Thank you in advance

Other people may have better suggestions.  Here is my suggestion.  Because you are going to substantially reorganize your music using a different folder structure, I strongly recommend doing this change using MC and NOT using commands outside of MC.  You may/will have a mess if you do it outside of MC

MC offers ways to do this using the file explorer view in the tree.  You should be able to do move groups of files within MC to your new structure.  It is not difficult.  DO IT ALL INSIDE MC.

here is a recent thread on the MC34 board that covers what you want to do that may also help:  https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,141103.0.html

Alright I am really confused about this
I cant find and instruction on how to copy and move an entire library from one hard that has multiple files on multiple paths to another hard drive through and convert them all to one path. I tried it once and it deleted off the old drive and put on new drive
Can someone give me step by step instructions how to copy from one destination or hard drive that has multiple paths then send a copy of my music files or media to another hard drive as a back up with one path

Did you read this:  https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Moving_Files

I merged your last post with your original thread.

The tool is explained on the wiki.  Read that, then experiment slowly.  The new location is shown.  You can move the files or copy them.  Read carefully.

I will just transfer the files directly to the new drive, then I guess rebuild my playlists again. Sometime this format of assistance is pretty challenging and it seems pretty difficult to get the answers you want. I still like the product especially being able to listen to my music while I work or drive around but this format of help is really hard to work with. I mean just answering the question as it was asked would have been less frustrating and time consuming

There are thousands of possible cases for what you ask.  We aren't able to provide detailed help.  So we have a wiki.

It's not difficult to do.  Just experiment until you understand the tools available.

@toddelving
I don't know any details what is your current situation but seems to me that my guide would do the job for you. Thread containing link to it was already posted here but there it is again:
