MPEG-H audio codec support…
« on: March 13, 2025, 04:48:37 am »

Hi there,

Is it possible to enable MC34 to recognise / playback (bitstream) audio encoded in MPEG-H?

This would be a fantastic new feature and give a great reason to upgrade. Currently when I import any MPEG-H files, (either mhm1 or mha1) no audio details are recognised and an error message is displayed on attempting playback.

The decoder is available for free via GitHub but I just want J River to be able to bitstream audio to my AVR.

Thanks

I agree that MPEG-H should at least be supported as a bitstreamed format like Atmos.  Please also support DTS-X

Unfortunately these 3D audio formats are not really compatible with PC-based audio playback. As for bitstreaming, we rely on the FFmpeg libraries for handling the encapsulation into the HDMI bitstream format, which does not support MPEG-H at all at this point (either to recognize, decode, or bitstream) - plus, I am not aware of HDMI audio devices in PCs being able to transport it (eg. the graphics card)

I wonder if you are aware of any PC software that can bitstream MPEG-H, just to demonstrate if the hardware can actually do it?

Note that DTS-X should be able to be bitstreamed already as part of DTS-HD.

Thanks for the response Hendrick.

I thought that ffmpeg added MPEG-H audio a few years ago? I’m not sure if at what flavour though? https://github.com/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/blob/23592f942db93776dab65a5e92400bb2f037390e/libavcodec/codec_desc.c#L3365

I have managed to get MPEG-H briefly working using a specially designed Android app on a Google Chromecast and a Firestick 4K Max. But it’s a real faff to do that and it becomes unusable really. There are quite a few albums in this format that have never got any other form of surround release, so this would be the only way to hear them properly.

On a PC there is an app called the VVPlayer offered by Fraunhofer, which can decode and play the format. I’m not sure how to bitstream that out of my Mac though?
