Wishlist: different, smart tags for iPod vs HD
« on: January 08, 2003, 09:18:35 pm »

Here is a suggestion for a feature that would make my life easier, and that of other iPod users:

As mentioned earlier, I don't want to change my original MP3 files on my HD. However, it would be cool if when I transferred files to the iPod, it used any changed information stored in the Media Library as the tags, including things like the replay gain setting.

My ultimate wish, however, is this:

When transferring songs to the iPod, look at the Artist field and see if that artist has <2 songs or <5 min of music in the library (user definable?). If so, then change the track title to be Title + Artist, and set the Artist field to "Various Artists" or something like that. Transfer the song to the iPod with these tags, but leave the original untouched.

The reason for this is to group all the various "one hit wonders" on compilation albums into one "artist", thus cleaning up the "Browse by Artist" menu on the iPod.

In order for the Replay Gain settings to be useful, the playback device must be able to read those settings.  Does the iPod have support reading Replay Gain tags?  And in this case it would specifically have to have support for reading MJ/MCs Replay Gain tags.

Replay Gain is probably a bad example. The real utility of the function I've described would be, for example, to allow for a set of abbreviated artist/album descriptions for use on the iPod, while keeping the full descriptions on the computer.

For example, I have a bunch of albums titled:

Cafe Del Mar Volumen Seis
Cafe Del Mar Volumen Ocho
Cafe Del Mar Volumen Nueve

On the iPod they show up as:

Cafe Del Mar V...
Cafe Del Mar V...
Cafe Del Mar V...

...which naturally makes navigation difficult!

It would be nice to be able to specify a set of alternate tags, generated manually or automatically, along the lines of:

CDM vol. 6
CDM vol. 8
CDM vol. 9

(Also the various artists renaming macro described above would be a godsend...)
