On demand or on de drive
« on: January 05, 2003, 03:55:34 pm »

There is a debate going on at JRiver now about whether we should provide tools for organizing the video people record or whether we should plug in to what the cable companies are now offering -- on demand video.

I'd like to be able to record anything I view, no matter where it comes from, and then be able to find it later.

Matt and Nikolay think the cable companies are taking care of that.

Your views would be welcome, even if you think they know what they're talking about and I'm an idiot.  Just try to be kind.

Anything you view sounds like a good idea.  Knowing my cable company of old I doubt they would be doing anything so sophisticated.  It took them 4 months to transfer my broadband when I moved house and they still haven't disconnected the phone yet in my parents house...

It would be nice to be able to record powerpoint presentations too so I could use them for credits in videos but that is probably completely unrelated to anything ;D

How are the cable companies "taking care of that"? Isn't it against their pay-per-view interests to allow viewers to record at will? Or are you referring to organization/navigation? Evidence of such benificence on the part of cable companies would be welcome.

This seems such an obvious goal, I can hardly believe it's a subject of debate. Are there any open containers of paint thinner near where Matt and Nikolay work?  ;)
