MP4's and MC-MJ
« on: December 23, 2002, 02:36:39 pm »

I noticed recently at Hydrogen that Nero is making available mp4 encoding and playback. Just for my own edification, what are the chances of this becoming an option in MC-MJ? License issues? Maybe a chance for third party deployment? Would you guys consider this? From some of the stuff I've read this is the future of encoding. At least with some chance of becoming mainstream and having portable players take advantage of it.

This would be the biggest draw for me. Portability and something to play them on. Obviously, if I wanted to stick with something at home I would most likely opt for Monkeys. But there isn't much use for Monkeys on the go. To large, and no hardware support-sans laptops.

I'd really like to hear some of your thoughts on this.  8)

The link in the previous post didn't seem to be working, so I re-posted it here:

if you want to play MP4 in MJ or MC use The in_mp4.dll from winamp but there is a problem; you can't change any tags of the files

mp3 is just a nickname for the audio layer of MPEG-2 compression, which is both audio and video.

Is mp4 then the same for the audio layer of MPEG-4?

So many standards to choose from.

This is a very good site for starting investigations:

http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/index.html

Here's a brief bio of the author:

"MPEG.ORG is published by MpegTV and edited by Tristan Savatier who has been an active member of the MPEG Committee from 1988 to 1995 and has participated to the making of the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 Video standards. "

I think the kicker here is AAC support. Not sure, but it sounds like an offshoot of FAAD2. Maybe I'll ask over there to see what the real deal is.

OK, here is what I did to get this to work for me:

In the Validated news section of HA there is a topic on Nero 5 something or another. Anyway, downloaded and installed that. Also downloaded the faad dll's provided by John33 in the same thread. Extracted them to both Winamp and MJ. Made a couple of wav files with MJ and put them in a test folder.

Next opened Nero and encoded to mp4 and aac. Imported said test folder. MJ can play these with no problem. Note: replay gain does not do a thing for these files.

Playback test between MP3 and MP4 is different. All mp3's are currently encoded at alt preset--fast extreme (VBR). The MP4 files are encoded at extreme (VBR) from the Nero suite. Size is smaller for these files. As are the bitrates. May have to try a different rate and see if anything is better, or worse. With only two files to mess with, I'm not sure I can give a fair assessment to this format. More later.

Almost forgot - MJ doesn't seem to play the .AAC file that I also created(?). Winamp does see this in the directory and plays it as well as the mp4.

In the HA thread, it says that the newest Nero Upgrade isn't on the Nero's web page. That was the 18th. It's on there now.

CVIII,

Have you tried this with any files? There seems to be a clearer (lack of better word) sound to the files I've tried. I should do a few mpc files as well. But it would toss out the portability factor then.

Side note for J River: Nero's burning allows multisession use without closing as an option. Still time to get this into MJ-MC?

I wonder what the license requirement is ($$$).

No. I couldn't find the MP4 option. I didn't try long. The only MP3 I found indicated it was for MP3Pro.
Nero came with my CD-RW. I haven't used it very much.

I think this issue is going to be resolved. It appears that Menno may adopt apev2 tagging system. I don't know for sure when it will be ready, but it should allow MJ-MC to edit these types of tags then. Shouldn't it?  ?

Also, from reading a thread over there (HA) the mp4 plugin might be available as of this weekend. It sounds like $15.00 US is what they are going to charge for it. I asked if it would work in MJ, but have not received any response yet. If it does, this would be a great way to do tags and use MJ's command line option for encoding. I would rather use one program for this, but I'm sure others might scoff at the thought of that.
