Should I Analyze my Audio ?
« on: December 20, 2002, 02:37:07 pm »

Hi all,

I've just finished ripping thousands of songs (7477 to be precise  ;D ) and am really tempted to push the 'Analyze Audio' button to see what it does - but before I do...

Can someone please explain exactly what 'Analyze Audio' will do to my songs (I'm hoping it will sort out the volume differences ?).

Can I reverse any changes that it makes ?

How realiable is this function in MC 9 ?  should I be aware of anything....

I have tried the [help] but it takes me to a MJ8 help file which doesn't explain 'analyze audio' as I presume its new in MC 9.

Thanks,

Mark

P.S. has anyone managed to load a number of pictures into MC 9 without problems - mine just bombs with a fatal error (same with video files).

Yes It Will, If you turn on the Real Play Gain Option In The DSP

>> Can I reverse any changes that it makes ?
It does not make changes to the music file, it does put a ID3v2 Tag in the file with the Analyze info that can be deleted

>> How realiable is this function in MC9 ?
It is fine

Why does it do this? It puts an intensity value in the ID3v2 comment field overwriting any comment already there. If you try giving an mp3 a "rating" then this value also gets written to the ID3v2 comment field, replacing any comment already there.
This is a pain when you have 1000's of files with personal comments. If the value can be deleted without affecting "Analyse Audio's" results, why is it put there in the 1st place?
I certainly don't want it there. I've stayed away from analyse audio functions till this gets fixed as I kind of value my ID3v2 comments.

This is not true statement

however it does add more comments

>> why is it put there in the 1st place?
Because they can use it that way per the directions of the ID3 documentation.

 COMM (Tool Name): Media Jukebox
 COMM (Tool Version): 9.0.88
 COMM (Replay Gain): -14.43390
 COMM (Peak Level): 1.00000

COMM (Comments): Charted At 04 In 1977 (My orginal comment before Anayze and it is still there)

 COMM (Rating): 5
 COMM (Intensity): 2

you can have many comment tags you are not limited to just one.

now if your using Another tag editor that can't handle more than one comment then it is the problem of that tag editor.

Interesting stuff KingSparta :) I stand corrected ;)

I've been using "Ultratagger" up 'til around about now, and after reading your reply above, I d'loaded a trial copy of a prog called "Dr. Tag" which I've seen mentioned here and there around here, and yeah, you're right enough, all my custom comments are there, but without any "shortname".......
So, now I begin to struggle to come to terms with this whole tagging malarky.
You couldn't point me in the direction of a reasonably easy to grasp tutorial about this stuff?
Is there a clear "best" 3rd party tagging app? (Shareware preferably, coz presumably, when it's all finished, MC will be all I need) I'm just a little paranoid what with it still being in beta stages and all that. Would be nice to have some reliable 3rd party app to keep an eye on how MC's coping with the tagging side of things.

It looks like ID3.Org paid there IP bill, and can be reached at.

http://www.id3.org/

it is not a very good read a bit boring really, not like Catch 22 or one of steven King's books. but most if not all the info about ID3v2 tags are on this link.

there are some good tools that have come out in the past year for C and Visual basic that allow for easy access to ID3 tags both Version 1.1 and Version 2.3. not to many programs use ID3v2.4 (Helium and I think MJ does)

Do other MP3 players (handheld or PC-based) recognize this replay gain tag?

Also, I'm confused by these two quotes from the Media Center 9 help file (which is labelled as a Media Jukebox help file), which seem to conflict with each other...

1. "Media Jukebox analyzes the file and stores the information in the database and in the file itself, so that playing the file with any player will play it back a the volume set here."  This one finishes by saying that to learn more, click here, which brings me to a page which says this:

2.  "Media Jukebox analyzes the file and stores the information in the database. The file itself is not changed. If you want the information stored in the file itself (to be played on other players) use a third party tool.

Which of these quotes is correct?  Is the info stored in the file itself, and can other players utilize that info?

Thanks!

The problem is that the different codec developers haven't really agreed on any "official" specs for implementing Replay Gain in their respective formats.

If you use MJ/MC to analyze files, the Replay Gain info that is stored in the tags is only usable by MJ/MC and will not be recognized by any other players.

If you use the MP3Gain utility outside of MJ/MC on your MP3 files, the files are physically altered with the gain info rather than it being saved in tags.  Therefore, it works in any player, including MJ/MC.

If you use the Vorbisgain or Replay Gain (for MPC) utilities outside of MJ/MC, the gain info is saved in tags and you must have a "gain aware" player (like Winamp) in order to play the files back using the new gain settings.  AFAIK, MJ/MC does not read these gain tags.

retrospek,
Oh yeah ... analyzing 7,000+ songs will take a long time. Some have found it advantageous to do it in relatively small batches that would more or less complete while you were asleep. The same is true for conversions to other formats like .ape to .mp3.
For your future rips, MC9 can be set to analyze replay gain during the rip. (I haven't actually tried it yet but I know it can be selected in "options")

If you get tired of waiting or want to use your computer for something else, cancelling will not affect the songs that have already been analyzed.

And in this case ,when you run 'Analyze Audio' again ,MC orMj would see the ones who had be 'analized' and skip them to go to the ones who need to be .
