Connecting To An Internal Server Is Easy
How Does One Connect To An External Server?

m01p://TheIPaddressYouWantHere:ThePortYouWantHere

Add that as a new library using the library manager.

Could i possible suggest that this is made more basic though with a button to 'add server' which then just asks for the IP and port and creates all this for us.
No one is going to know how to do that without being told.

Yeah, in 9 I think it was more targetted to local libraries which are now automatically found and so it is meant to make it even easier.

For remote libraries though it has become harder as a result.

for some reason, i can't connect to my roommate's computer over the network, using the "find media servers" command -- using the IP works fine but then it is connecting over the internet and not via the network. the connection appears to start, but then ends with an "unable to connect to server" error. anybody know how to fix this?

Connecting to a specific IP address, by itself, doesn't mean that the connection is made over the Internet.

The configuration issue will be addressed.  I agree with you, Nila.
