Now that MJ9 is beta, reminder for new features
« on: November 07, 2002, 10:19:37 am »

A kindly reminder for new features :-)

- Auto import (put files into directories, MJ picks them up automatic and imports them)

- See which playlist you are playing, the moment you modify the playing now, it will say e.g. "Modified Playlist" (see winamp3)

- Play controls in the taskbar (see WMP9 when minimized)

- Graphical Rating (see WMP9)

- Playing now detachable or like the file properties window

- Make sorting wizard more user friendly (popup for fields to sort on, radio button for ascending/descending)

...All for now...

Oh, and one thing I've asked a few times for, please...

A gapless playback mode for "gapless-unfriendly" formats like MP3 and WMA. APE's and OGG's and some other formats work fine, but the other ones always have a small gap. I know there is the possibility of reencoding the file to get gapless, but that ruins quality. I know there is always the suggestion of smooth crossfading with 0.1s, but it isn't good because it mixes the start of both songs.

As I said before, I _think_ it can be done by having smooth crossfading with a very small interval, say 0.01s, but that has to be coded in, so I can't try it out... I think MJ9 would be a good place to experiment this.

If it can't be done, it's alright, just let me know so I can get this out of my head :) There hasn't been a single player / plugin I've ever tried that can do this...

Thanks

I'd love a search method to be able to do the equivalent of: GROUP BY in SQL so when I do a search trying to find an album I could do: GROUP BY Artist, Album

Any chance of a button like the favourites one being stuck above the drop target with all the main groups from the left pane in it to give easy navigation - Playlists, Media Library, etc.
I know this could be done with the favourites but two things. Firstly I'd like to have these as two seperate tools, secondly I'd like it fixed right on the top of the tree so it's directly related. I could be alone in this though.

Toggle List styles - Could we have something like this for Column view schemes too so we can change between preset orderings. Would be hugely useful for doing different tasks.

Like to see option grouping for: Audio, Video, Graphic if possible so I could set double click action for each, play action for each etc.

Option to manually set what media type (audio, video, graphic) each file extension is as I've already found one (.mv2) that you have as audio but that for me at least is video. There could be lots that could be either.

Toggle List styles - Currently there is no way of telling what list style mode it is in or what that list style mode actually is called or means. All I know is that there are two picture modes and one old style. Any chance of changing this to a button like the view filter so I can see my choices and know what they are?

Option to customise the date display format for the:  Date Imported field - I just want it to say:  X days thats it for all my songs.

Using Date Imported as a tree view - there needs to be some way to organise this better.
Maybe give us an option to specify if we want the nodes grouped by day, week, month, year, minute etc.

Smart 'Get Properties from Filename'.
This will break down all the files selected (alot of the time this tool will be used on an album at a time) and break all the filenames apart at the -'s (or a specified seperator). It will then look at all the parts and try to work out which parts are which and use this as the default suggested format for the songs.

For this same tool - Make all the typing for the parts after the [  be done by autocomplete as they're being typed. This will stop spelling mistakes that could cause this function to fail.

And again for that tool, add an option to do an automatic cleaning of properties when renaming. Maybe this will just bring up the clean box straight after they click on ok for them to then choose the settings to use.

A better way to sort and delete playlists.
(ie a way to select multiple playlists to move or delete)

playlist groups sticking to the top of the list.

playlists in the 'send to' menu need to be cascading. Right now they're impossible to use :(

Regarding Gapless playback of MP3's:

LAME can produce gapless MP3's, but all songs must be listed on the command line sent to LAME.

It's my wish that MJ9 include this functionality by either allowing multiple filenames on the external encoder command line, or incorporating the functionality in their plug-in encoders.

Another feature request
 - Feurio can detect tracks that are merged into each other when ripping and can then rip them as one track when it detects this. I'd LOVE this feature to be added to MJ or even better, rip them as seperate tracks but store info into the mp3 that it blends into the next track and have an option for MJ to always play these tracks one after the other with no pause in between them, even when on shuffle mode.

 - When ripping:
+ options for: Stereo, joint stereo, mono etc.

    + ripping options of:
        -  Rip all tracks then encode
        -  Rip all tracks and encode in the background as ripping
        -  Rip each track then encode it before ripping next track
as 3 clearly options.

+ option to create a .m3u playlist of all the tracks in the same folder as the tracks.

An option to save cover art in the files directory instead of in the MJ cover art dir.

Options for a 'smart rating' system. This would automatically adjust songs ratings depending on number of plays over a certain time period.
Would have to have options defineable for:
- maximum number of points to increase/decrease
- maximum date since import to carry on changing automatically for.
- levels to use as values to decide on automatic rating.

This would be a great feature to allow new songs that we get and play a lot to get rated higher as we play them lots. If we then stop playing them as much over time then their rating would slowly die off to reflect we no longer like listening to them as much. We'd be able to set levels though so that a song that made it all the way up to a level 5 rating by us loving it and playing it tons, wouldn't drop any lower than say level 3 no matter how little we play it in time.

Could be powerful but might be complex.

Another feature request:

Burning - the ability to have naming formats for the songs being burnt when they are mp3 cd's.

I could therefore burn files with the naming format:
Artist - Album - Track # - Name
with the naming format:
Artist - Album/Track # - Name

This would allow them to comply with the ISO standard and save me from ending up with cd's full of truncated filenames which are totally unuseful.

As option to only rename files that were going to be truncated would be useful as well.

Another feature, was going to post it in the thread about graphical ratings but it was closed for some reason. Could the stars be implemented as half stars so that a song could be 1.5 stars etc. i've seen this on some jukeboxes although I cant remember which and it would basically give us 10 options for a songs rating as trying to differentiate between the quality of 7000 different songs purely by giving them values between 1 and 5 hardly does them justice.

I just keep comin up with ideas, dunno if that's a good or a bad thing :)

When browsing using the 'My Computer' tree I have several directories that I would like to see ALL the files in. Sometimes the files are in subdir's and so MJ doesn't show them. I'd like an option to 'recurse tree' whereby all the files in all the sub folders from that point are basically found and displayed.

And a note to all the readers who read this and dont work for MJ
Please put some feedback on ideas if you like them as MJ aren't gonna implement a feature purely because I want or like it. They'll do it if you all want it so they need to know what you guys want!!

I agree with Nila's requested feature.

Another feature that would be nice:

An eject button for the CD-drive (or on the right click menu)

To be able to choose what to view in the left pane.

e.g. I don't use TV Tuner, so that I could choose to hide the icon in the left pane.

Is it possible to rename the "Favourites" I create ?

Now I have some really deep nested playlists I want to have as favourites.
When clicking on the Favourites button, There is a very long name on it.

Just showing the name of the playlist would be nice or letting us choose to rename the favourite

And maybe whatever trees were expanded when exiting MJ, when re-opening it remembers what was expanded and expands it again ?

I bet you wish I'd just shut up :)
Please feel free to tell me so at any point.

Another request: I'd LOVE some feature to check my music. mp3Utility seems to be able to check my songs to make sure they're all ok and EncSpot Pro also gives some kind of indication. From what I can tell and have heard though, mp3Utility is more reliable for results.

I know neither are perfect but it would really just help to give me suggestions as to which of my songs might be dodgy and need replacing.

This would enable me to keep a perfect quality library :)

Rots compaired to "Helium 2" when checking Mpeg Sync Errors.

I use both almost daily

I Tested EncSpot (not the pro version)

this program does not check for Mpeg Sync errors like helium and MP3\utility does.

the way it gets it's rating is based on Kbps encoding, encoder settings etc... so somthing it tells you as good could be full of errors and the same with bad files could be good.

I do not see a need for this program since it really does nothing of value in regards for checking the true quality of the MP3.

You must check every day Monday - Friday

I build may pop up at any time depending if they feel like it.

Right now Normaly 2 builds each week

I think the next build will be monday, there are a few new options that should pop up next week to test...

One of them Gateley is working on that I wish to test and that is File ID "Finger Printing".

Feature request.
 - Ability to change what file info is displayed in the library.
ie. Ability to display id3v1 info, id3v2 info, library info, file info.

This would let us check id3v1 tags before sending to things like mp3 players etc. Also let us see what info is stored in the files when checking files that dont actually store data in them

- Ability to easily create .m3u playlists for a bunch of selected files. Right now is a long and painful task that saves full path, just want relative path for songs.

But MJ has a tag dump so it's easy to see what's up with your tags.

on these lines, tho, Perhaps neatening up the tag dump....

Hmm, found it.
Not exactly what I had in mind. This isn't really a useful tool for what I meant. I have a library of over 7000 songs. Definitely not planning to use this to check them and view their info.

Feature Request:
- Ability to change 'properties' window to display id3v1 or id3v2 tag info so we can change the properties in whichever we want.

if there was support for this in the SDK something could be ritten to do with what you ask.

but there is no way to pull up Id3v1 tags and then pull up id3v2 tags.

I think Matt hates ID3v2 just as much As ID3v1 but i think Id3v1 will fade in a few years when better tagging support comes out (if it ever does).
